St. Kitts – Nevis Cultural Dance Workshop

Cultural dancers in St. Kitts spent some time last week learning techniques of a more modern dance in a tale of old school meets new style.

The Victoria Road Community Center was the venue for a hip-hop workshop which drew young dancers of the hip-hop genre but also appealed to more seasoned performers from traditional dance groups including Vivace, Okolo Tegremantine as well as Christian groups Hebrew Brothers and Divine Praise.

The workshop was organized by the Alliance Française in collaboration with the Department of Culture and facilitated by choreographer David Milome of Martinique. He was supported by team members Marie-Aude Ichane and Jean-Michel Garraud.

Nevis Government Discusses National HIV/AIDS Plan

Stakeholders in the fight against HIV/AIDS on Nevis, had the opportunity to make their final comments on a draft National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan for St. Kitts and Nevis for 2008 to 2012, at a one day workshop on February 27, 2008 at the Red Cross conference room in Charlestown.
 
The consultation which was hosted by the National AIDS Secretariat and the Nevis AIDS Coordination Unit, would ultimately determine the success of St. Kitts and Nevis in the reduction of the spread of HIV/AIDS and its impact on individuals, families and the community over the next five years.
 
Acting Health Planner/HIV/AIDS Coordinator on Nevis Mrs. Nicole Slack-Liburd told the Department of Information, that the primary reason for the session was to get feedback from the stakeholders, a follow up exercise from a consultation in 2007 with various interest groups on the island.

St. Kitts – Nevis Bird Rock Stadium Nearly Complete

Members of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the CARIFTA Games were visibly excited on Monday as they witnessed activities leading to the completion of the Bird Rock athletic stadium.

“I can say I am pleased with what I have seen,” Chairman of the Local Organising Committee Lester Hanley told SKNIS. “The track is about 75 percent complete and should be completed this week and ready for marking (of the lanes) next week. The temporary stands should arrive on site during the course of this week and the seats for the grand stand will also be here this week,” he added noting that offices being constructed as part of that structure are 90 percent complete.

Mr. Hanley commented that the registration process for athletes and supporters coming for the March 21 to 24 event has been positive and indicated that the numbers continue to rise daily.

St. Kitts – Nevis Elections Meetings To Start

Supervisor of Elections Mr. Leroy Benjamin has begun a series of meetings to sensitize stakeholders on the new system of confirmation as the electoral reform process continues.

In a Press Release issued on Wednesday, Mr. disclosed that he invited the Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, the Hon. Mark Brantley to meet with him at the new Electoral Office on Central Street.

“The meeting is one in a series planned and follows a similar session with the Electoral Commission. Similar meetings are to be held with the leaders of all political parties in St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Mr. Benjamin.

St. Kitts – Nevis Electoral Reform Process Moving Ahead

St. Kitts and Nevis‘ Supervisor of Elections, Mr. Leroy Benjamin says the electoral reform process in the twin-island Federation is moving forward satisfactorily.

Mr. Benjamin also told BBC Caribbean on Tuesday that the Electoral Office is being run independently.

He disclosed that hundreds of persons have responded so far to the confirmation process that is now underway at the Electoral Offices in Basseterre and Charlestown involving a new Voters Registrar. That process is expected to continue until September and will result in a New Voters list.

In the BBC interview, Pastor Benjamin denied reports that the reform will cater to overseas voting and that while Kittitians and Nevisians residing overseas can participate in the confirmation process at embassies and consulates, voting will actually be restricted to the country on Election Day.
