Calypso music’s biggest female icon, Singing Sandra, was announced today as a special guest performer at this weekend’s much anticipated and talked about Miss Personality and Marvellous Queen and Ring Bang Calypso Show. Born Sandra Des Vignes, the talented singer is well known for her nurturing approach and maternal counsel to Caribbean. “I am very excited about performing in St.Kitts,” Sandra said during a phone interview.

Sandra has come a long way since her debut at Sparrow’s Young Brigade tent in 1984.

From taking the calypso stage against the wishes of a concerned father to her rise to royalty status in the genre, the two-time national calypso monarch continues to defy all odds. While at Young Brigade she copped both the local National Calypso Queen and St Maarten Queen of the World titles in 1987 with Sexy Employees, more popularly known as Die With My Dignity. The song mirrored Sandra’s image and spiritually strong moral standing and was an immediate hit with women in society who identified with the images of male chauvinism in the workplace. “”˜You could keep your money, I go keep my honey and die with my dignity’

In 1991, she took her career a step further with the formation of the United Sisters quartet that featured, along with Sandra, calypsonians Marvellous Marva, Tigress and the now-deceased Lady B. The group, all graduates of the Best Village programme, was a hit with Caribbean calypso fans and represented feminine strength in a time when women were either too afraid or timid to hold the spotlight. They went on to win the Trinidad National Song Festival and placed second in the Caribbean Song Festival that same year with “Ambataila Woman” penned by Lady B.

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas says that the main challenge facing mothers the world over today is finding a way to steer their children from the pull of powerful interests who glamorize crass materialism, sensationalize sickening violence, and encourage mindless vulgarity.

“This is a gargantuan task, one that will require all our involvement, and in this struggle, women will have a very special part to play because of the special skills, the special wisdom, the unique spiritual strength with which the Universe clearly imbued the women of this earth,” Dr. Douglas told nearly 250 persons attending the annual Mother’s Day Gala organised by Kittitians and Nevisians Association (KANA) in New York on Sunday and held under his distinguished patronage.

Pointing out that the Caribbean, St. Kitts and Nevis and the World are at a cross-road, Dr. Douglas said there is something about the way that human beings have been interacting, behaving and relating all around the world that have not created the best results that are needed.

“There is something about the way young people are being raised that is not quite right.  And so, in London, in New York, in Brussels, in the Caribbean, and all over the world, young people are showing the signs of emotional and spiritual distress. Not each and every one of them, of course,” said Prime Minister Douglas, adding: “In St. Kitts and Nevis and throughout the Caribbean we have countless young people for whom life seems a straight and highly manageable road.  But there is no denying that, globally, there are more young people in crisis today than ever before.”

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has issued instructions to his Attorneys at Law and Counsel to take whatever lawful action permitted under the law against Political Leader, Mr. Lindsay Grant and his party’s mouthpiece, The Democrat newspaper “to ensure that Mr. Grant and the Democrat are made to pay for their reckless and irresponsible allegations and conduct.”

A statement from Dr. Douglas’ attorney, Senior Counsel Mr. Anthony Astaphan of Dominica on Wednesday noted what he describes as “a very disturbing trend taking place in the OECS.”

“In recent times, Political Parties in Opposition have fabricated strategies of ambush and destruction directed at sitting Prime Ministers. These strategies and their implementation are known as weapons of mass deception. The politically crafted weapons of mass deception are designed to destroy the reputations of Political Leaders and Prime Ministers. Opposition Parties have been advised that that is the only way for them to win an election,” said Astaphan, a prominent Caribbean lawyer.

Mr. Astaphan further noted that in St. Lucia, the United Workers Party sought to paint then Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony with the outrageous and false allegation of corruption.

Scores of Kittitians and Nevisians living in St. Maarten were told last Friday night by the Federation’s Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas that the country was changing dramatically for the better through its major emphasis on Hospitality and Tourism development, implemented by his governing St. Kitts – Nevis Labour Party.

Dr. Douglas pointed to the meeting, organised by St. Kitts and Nevis Association of St. Maarten that in the continuous efforts to transform the national economy emphasis was also being placed on social development, information technology, electoral reform, political changes and developing sports tourism.

Following is the report carried in the St. Maarten Herald of last Saturday.

Dr. Douglas said much emphasis was also being placed on helping the former employees of the sugar industry, which was closed down in 2005, to become qualified for other means of employment and helping them to improve their living arrangements.

Dr. Douglas noted that although his government was being accused by the opposition of ill-treating the former sugar industry workers, by his observation St. Kitts and Nevis was doing a better job than many of the other countries in the region that had to close down their sugar industries.

Another Travel Agency To Boycott St. Kitts

Green Earth Travel to Steer Clients Away From Island Until the ‘Needless Suffering of Animals’ at St. Kitts Ross Veterinary School Ends

Cabin John, Maryland

PETA’s recently announced travel boycott of St. Kitts over the needless mutilation and killing of healthy sheep, donkeys, and goats at the island’s Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine is under discussion at travel agencies around the globe. While some agencies are planning to quietly steer travelers to other destinations, Washington, D.C.-based Green Earth Travel has publicly announced that it will encourage its clients not to visit St. Kitts until the veterinary school ends its cruel and deadly surgical procedures on animals. PETA has been urging Ross to join other veterinary schools and use only modern, humane teaching methods. Green Earth’s decision comes on the heels of Las Vegas-based high-end travel agency Holiday Systems International’s refusal to book holidays to St. Kitts for its more than 300,000 clients.
In a letter to PETA, Green Earth President Donna Zeigfinger says that because of the harmful and outdated surgeries that are performed on animals at Ross””and the St. Kitts government’s defense of them–she will urge her clients to vacation elsewhere. “We will only resume encouraging people to book their travel to St. Kitts once Ross University ends the needless suffering of animals by using humane veterinary teaching alternatives recommended by PETA,” she writes. Green Earth has also posted an alert about the alleged animal abuse at Ross University in its newsletter.
