St. Kitts and Nevis must use the next 25 years to maximise its potential in a global context, using the emerging regional Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) and the proposed Economic Union of the OECS as the building blocks to its future economic structure.

“Over the coming years, it is vital that we build a highly productive Service Economy, and in doing so create a strong entrepreneurial environment, empowering our men and women to become more creative in income generating projects, and at the same time, we must raise our standards to international levels,” St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas told close to 600 nationals at a 25th Anniversary Dinner and Ball in London on Saturday night.

Minister of Social Development Honourable Rupert Herbert led a touring party of government officials to pay tribute to senior citizens in St. Kitts.

Visits to senior citizens by Ministers of Governments are a year round activity, but October’s Month of the Elderly have heightened the occasion, and made it even more special for celebrants and the honoured seniors.

The touring party which also included Director of Community Affairs, Jovil Martin as well as Supervisor of Social Assistance, Ann Wigley made six stops today (Tuesday) to salute the oldest persons in the East and Central Basseterre districts. One such visit was to 101-year-old Violet Gumbs of Bird Rock. Minister Herbert said he was pleased to be in the company of a strong nation builder.

Taiwan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Javier Hou said St. Kitts and Nevis is a country with unlimited potentials.

“When I was in St. Kitts last week to attend the national independence celebration, I felt the vitality, optimism and diligence of the people. It is a country with limited potentials,” Hou is quoted in the Taipei Times, which carried a report on celebrations in Taiwan to mark the 25th anniversary of St. Kitts and Nevis of Independence.

St. Kitts and Nevis Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Hon. Dennis Merchant was in the Taiwanese capital to participate in the celebrations.

The two Rotary Clubs in St. Kitts are taking steps to reduce violence and anti-social behaviour among young people in the twin-island Federation.

The Rotary Club of St. Kitts and the Rotary Club of Liamuiga have announced the establishment of a Foundation called the Advancement of Children Foundation to counteract the trend of rising violence and anti-social behavior among the young people of the Federation through the promotion of good parenting, family and social values.  The theme of the Foundation is “Ensuring Our Children’s Future.”

“The goals and objectives include the provision of help and guidance in enabling parents to become better parents, to stem the tide of teenage pregnancies, to fund specialists to educate youth in anger management, to eradicate child abuse from society and to champion the development and enforcement of rules and guidelines for the administration of stronger discipline in the home, school and community,” Chair of the Foundation, Miss Leah Sahely said in a statement.
