Nevis To Host World-Class Triathlon

Nevis Cycle and Triathlon Club and the island of Nevis are gearing up for the 6th Annual Olympic Triathlon. The event, known as the Carino Health Spa Triathlon, will be held on March 16, 2008; This year is very special, as athletes are gearing up for the Beijing Olympics, the Nevis triathlon has been sanctioned by the world Governing body (ITU) as a Continental Cup event. This means that male and female elite athletes competing will be able to gain valuable points directly applicable to their Olympic campaigns, and puts Nevis on the world map of triathlons.

Most recently Triathlete Magazine has within the last month given invaluable endorsements to the Federation’s most international annual sporting event. Of the thousands of triathlons world wide, Triathlete Magazine named the Nevis triathlon among its top five “Must-Do Races for 2008”.  The same magazine also published a story and photographs in its Feb. 2008 issue about the 2007 race as the centre page spread.

St. Kitts – Nevis To Benefit From BNTF Programme

Communities in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis are expected to see more benefits from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)-financed Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF).

The Federal Cabinet, meeting on Monday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, reviewed the management framework of the BNTF, whose objective is to meet basic community needs such as road improvement and educational infrastructure development among other areas.

Cabinet, after careful analysis of the efficiency of the programme made the changes which are geared towards improving the success as well as timeliness in the implementation of BNTF projects.

6,000 Cruise Passengers Visit St. Kitts – Nevis In One Day

The parade of cruise ships into the Basseterre Roadstead continued on Saturday with the visit of nearly 6,000 passengers and 3,000 crew members.

The Queen Mary 2 arrived from Tortola, British Virgin Islands with 2,256 passengers and 1279 crew before sailing for The Bahamas; the Empress of the Seas arrived from Puerto Rico with 1699 passengers and a crew of 672, before sailing for St. Maarten and the Oceana docked with 1996 passengers and a crew of 887 from the Dominican Republic. It later sailed for Antigua. In all 5,851 cruise passengers visited Saturday along with 2,838 crew members.

Most of the passengers on the three ships disembarked and went on sight-seeing tours via taxis, tour buses and the St. Kitts Scenic Railway; shopping, sun and sea-bathing, hiking, horse-back riding, snorkeling, golfing, kayaking and sailing.

St. Kitts – Nevis Government To Address Healthcare

The St. Kitts and Nevis Cabinet on Monday approved a new National Strategic Health Plan, designed to address the major healthcare challenges facing the twin-island Federation.

The five-year plan, presented by Minister of Health, Hon. Rupert Herbert, sets out strategies to achieve a healthier and more production nation and was developed through support from the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO).

It has adopted a multi-sectoral approach involving government, the private sector, and civil society and is based on seven critical pillars.

The Development of the Health Systems will focus on sustainable financing mechanisms, diagnostic capacity and continuous quality improvement, while the Family Health  segment will pay increased attention to immunization, men’s health, and senior citizens’ health.

Nevis Premier Speaks To Weslyan Church Delegates

Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry called on members of the Weslyan Church to remember the children, parents and the community in which they served as they decided in which the direction the church should go.
 
Mr. Parry made the call on February 23, 2008, while he addressed delegates the 47th Annual District Conference of the Weslyan Holiness Church at the Mount Nevis Hotel. The retreat formed part of the church’s 100th anniversary celebrations. The District covers St. Kitts, Nevis, Saba, Anguilla and St. Maarten.
 
He said the church had a very significant role to play in the society and in the behaviour of everyone in particular the youth. He also said it had a responsibility to reach out to the community to remind persons of the importance of protection from negative outside influences.
