Nevis Premier Celebrates Independence With Floridians

So said Premier Joseph Parry at the St. Kitts – Nevis Association of Florida (SNAF) Annual Independence dinner dance in Miami recently.

Premier Parry delivered the keynote address in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Independence for St.Kitts-Nevis at the Howard Johnson last Saturday.

The Nevisian leader was invited by the non-profit St.Kitts- Nevis organization to speak about the growth of the twin island State over the last 25 years.

It is getting tougher to reach St. Kitts and Nevis by air.

High fuel prices may force a second airline out of the Caribbean market less than two months prior to the onset of the traditional tourism season, which could have a major and unwelcome impact on the number of visitors reaching the Federation. Carib Aviation officials have publicly said the company will cease flight operations on Sept. 30 and close down altogether on Oct. 5, but sources in the firm say the decisions are not final.

Other company officials, who refused to allow their names to be used, also said the situation remains flexible.

Should Carib Aviation shut down, it will severe the air link between Antigua and St. Kitts and Nevis. This has been a traditional route used by tourists from the United Kingdom and Europe.

Carib currently flies as a subcontractor for LIAT in the Federation. No one at LIAT was available to discuss future plans if the Carib closure goes forward.

Carib’s announcement comes just two weeks after XL Airways announced that it was ceasing flights between six Caribbean destinations and London. XL carried about 7,000 passengers to St. Kitts each year.

The Vatican, the United Nations, Dominica, Israel, the United States and Mexico have sent messages of congratulations on the 25th Anniversary of Independence of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

United States President, the Honourable George W. Bush in a message congratulating Governor General His Excellency Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian on the nation’s milestone said “the United States looks forward to working closely with St. Kitts and Nevis in the years ahead as we continue to promote democracy, security, and prosperity throughout the Caribbean and the Western Hemisphere.”

President of the United States of Mexico, His Excellency Felipe Calderon said he was “certain that the dialogue and cooperation between Mexico and St. Kitts and Nevis will contionue developing and benefit the friendship, well being and development of both nations.”

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in sending cordial greetings and best wishes to Sir Cuthbert Sebastian and the people of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis “entrusting the Nation to the loving providence of Almighty God” and pray that the people may continue to work for the common good by upholding human dignity and promoting justice and peace for all.

St. Kitts and Nevis commemorates National Heroes Day on Tuesday with Governor General His Excellency Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian and Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas among dignitaries laying wreaths at the monument in honour of the Father of the Nation and First National Hero, the Right Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw.

The Ceremony begins at 9:00 A.M. tomorrow Tuesday 16th September (National Heroes Day ““ a public holiday) at the monument, which was unveiled in St. Paul’s, birth place of Sir Robert, on National Heroes Day, last year. Sir Robert, who was born on 16th September 1916, would have been 92 on Tuesday. Premier Bradshaw died on May 23rd 1978.

Following the inspection of a Guard of Honour comprising members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and the Cadet Corps, the bio of the St. Paul’s-born National Hero, who also served as Chief Minister and First Premier will be read by Mr. Crios Freeman.

Prime Minister Douglas, a cousin of Bradshaw and who also hails from St. Paul’s, will deliver brief remarks.
