The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) through the Ministry of Social Development, launched the Community Cohesion Initiative on September 24 at the Ministry of Trade’s conference room. The programme was designed to reduce the level of anti social behaviour among youths in the community and to coordinate the development of meaningful dialogue between various communities, groups and the government.

Minister with responsibility for Social Transformation on Nevis Hon. Hensley Daniel, looked at the evidence to support the development of the programme. He stated that the Counseling Unit of the Department of Social Services had indicated that many persons who were involved with the law or conflict, their difficulties had flowed from family issues, so that type of intervention was an important step to address the situation.

Residents qualified to vote were making sure Monday that they meet Tuesday’s deadline to confirm their names on current Voters List.

Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday long lines of persons confirming that their names are on the current list, registering for the first time having attained 18 years of age and meeting the necessary qualification or picking up their National Identification Cards were maintained throughout the day outside the Electoral Office on Central Street in Basseterre.

The deadline for the Voter Confirmation Exercise which began on December 27th 2007 is September 30th 2008.

The electoral reform process, which began two years ago, is expected to result in a new Voters List, a national identification card and the introduction of a photo id when registering for the first time.

In August 2006, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis presented a White Paper in the lawmaking body outlining the process for electoral reform and the preferred steps through which consultation with stakeholders and implementation of electoral reform will result in a legally reformed electoral system.

St. Kitts – Nevis PM Speaks At United Nations

PM Douglas Addresses 63rd General UN Session

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
September 25, 2008 (CUOPM)

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affiars, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said Thursday that the twin-island Federation which became an independent nation some 25 year ago has achieved much despite a multitude of problems.

Addressing the 63rd Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Douglas said that the St. Kitts and Nevis experience demonstrates that good governance and prudent management of one’s resources; appropriate investment in people and systems, protecting people’s freedom of association, religion, and speech; the support and facilitation of a free and vibrant press; success at advancing the socio-economic well-being of one’s people; and the upholding of democratic ideals, are determined not by land mass, but by national character and political commitment.

“They are the result, not of demographic or geographic size, but of long-standing socio-cultural traditions. They are a function, not of GDP, but of an entrenched ethos of striving and determination. Our faith has steadied our resolve and belief in ourselves and our future. And of course, along the way, we have relied understandably on institutions such as our beloved United Nations,” he said.

Prime Minister Douglas pointed out that through its United Nations membership, St. Kitts and Nevis has built important and strategic partnerships and stood shoulder to shoulder with other member states to protect its individual rights and collective freedoms and have fought battles far bigger than the expectation for a country of its size.
