Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry and his wife Mrs. Myrtle Parry, hosted a cocktail party at the Old Manor Hotel on July 17, in honour of the 2008 Culturama participants.

The cocktail featured speeches by Premier Parry, this year’s Chairman of Culturama Mr. Halstead Byron as well as representatives from the various sub committees.

Premier Parry in his presentation offered words of support to the participants but focussed heavily on the issue of deviant behaviour.  He encouraged the public to collaborate with the police and assist them in any way possible.

“Every precaution is being taken to make sure we have good shows.  Every effort is being made by the Police Force on St. Kitts and on Nevis to make sure you are protected.

“The Police is aware of what is taking place.  They have done their homework, they have organised themselves and they are ready for any eventualities,” Minister Parry said.

He appealed to parents to enroll their sons in positive activities in order to avoid them becoming delinquent.

“I am always surprised and I have been surprised for the past two years that we speak of the Juniour Calypso Show, then you see all the girls coming up and hardly any boys and it is a bad message in our community, that more and more the boys are not getting involved in anything positive and constructive.

Chairman of the governing St. Kitts – Nevis Labour Party, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris has highlighted several achievements of outgoing Minister of National Security, Immigration and Labour, Hon. Dwyer Astaphan and has expressed confidence that he will remain firmly committed to the causes and programme of the Labour Movement in general, and to the members of his Constituency in particular.

“His service to both country and party is worthy of the highest commendation,” said Dr. Harris, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, industry and Consumer Affairs,  in his statement issued on Tuesday.

Dr. Harris said that the challenge for Minister Astaphan to take on the task of contesting for election to parliament was one that was presented to him, not one that he had sought after, it was a matter which caused him deep soul searching and lengthy consideration.

“Persons who were involved recall the numerous meetings and lengthy discussions which took place before Mr. Astaphan eventually agreed to accept “˜the call.’ Once he had accepted the challenge it became clear to everyone that he gave it his all and he did so at considerable personal sacrifice. This included giving up his personal law practice and the level of remuneration which it provided. Even more importantly it meant putting his name and reputation on the line,” noted the Labour Party Chairman.

He added: “From the very outset opposition elements launched against him personal attacks that were as vicious as they were unrelenting. Through it all he has defended himself with honour and dignity. During his public life he has experienced personal tragedy which he has borne with grace and equanimity.”

Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance Hon. Joseph Parry, Cabinet Secretary Mr. Ashley Farrell and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications Mr. Ernie Stapleton, met with 29-30 members of the Nevis Bus Association (NBA) led by President Mr. Kurt Swanston on Monday July 07, at the Bath Hotel Conference Room.

The meeting was called to arrive at an amicable solution with regard to an increase in bus fares as requested by the Association and a matter related to concessions which would provide needed relief for all bus drivers on many of the costs associated with their operations.

Premier Parry regretted that the situation with the bus drivers had escalated to a strike and noted that Sunday July 06 was the first indication he had received of their intention to take protest action.

Mr. Parry made himself available from 5:55am on July 07, 2008, at Bath Hotel to meet with the drivers in an effort to avert the strike action.

While the Government recognised the urgency of the matter, the bus drivers must realise there is a process in place that must be considered.
