Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI) is reporting higher revenues and improved profits in 2007.

The parent company, TDC, which made pre-tax profit of EC$15.3 million in 2007, said OTI, a 71-room and 8 condominium hotel, benefited tremendously from the ICC Cricket World Cup matches that were staged in St. Kitts during that year.

“This along with management’s success at winning’s back former corporate customers resulted in higher revenues and improved profits compared to last year.  Several initiatives were taken that resulted in solid cost saving in other areas despite high maintenance and utilities costs,” said the TDC Group report.

The company said its TDC Airline Services Ltd in St. Kitts made a loss last year following a small profit in 2006. The loss was incurred despite management’s best effort and increased revenues from the Western Union businesses.

TDC Airline Services Nevis Ltd also had a very challenging year in which it again sustained a Net Loss.

Premier Parry Speaks To Nevis Citizens

As part of the Nevis Reformation Party led Nevis Island Administration”˜s (NIA) pledge of transparency, Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry gave a report on the activities commencing May 19th 2008 ,at the studio of Nevis Television  (NTV) on Monday, May 26th, 2008.

Presently Nevis is experiencing a six-week drought. The Nevis Island Administration is proposing a number of measures to be taken to replenish the island with quality water.

“We have had a program of well-drilling around the island and I am happy to report that several small wells and one major well in the area of Maddens Estate will produce over three hundred gallons of water a minute. We (NIA) have been told by Bedrock Exploration and Development Technologies (BEAD) that a pump is under construction and will be connected to the system by Mid June,” said Premier Parry.

To assist the water Department, the general public is being encouraged to be prudent with their use of water.  Necessary precautions for water conservation, such as limiting the frequency of washing cars and watering plants, are being echoed.  Residents are also implored to listen to the radio for updates on any disruptions in the water schedule for given areas.

“In the next four weeks the water problem will be resolved and if the drought continues water will still be available,” said Premier Parry.

On the subject of geothermal energy, Premier Parry said that he was informed by West Indies Power that the first well in the Springhill area is a productive well and has the capacity to provide 34 megawatts of power.  That plant will be able to supply an abundance of electricity that will be cheaper, and will significantly impact the cost of living in Nevis.

During the course of the report Premier Parry apprised listeners on development of the AMMAN hotel, a hotel chain that operates out of Asia with the highest reputation of upscale accommodations for the high-end clients. “The chief architecture came to Nevis and they are very excited about the prospects here in Nevis,” he explained.

Mr. Simon Lowe of AMMAN Development visited Nevis and stated that the area in Hanley’s Road, Gingerland is an improved site. “We are at a stage now where the architects have gone to work. Documents must be drawn up and later this year. The country will be in a position to calculate the time period when the hotel will start,” articulated the Premier.

Christophe Harbour Development Spurs Economic Activity

Persons involved in the service industry, landscaping, construction and heavy trucking fields have all been beneficiaries of the many developments taking place in St. Kitts and Nevis.

This was stressed by the Vice President of Auberge Firesky Ellis Hazel, during a Cabinet and media tour of the ongoing work at Christophe Harbour last week. Mr. Hazel noted that the project construction of the Beach House Bungalows and the accompanying restaurant was managed by Robert “˜Bobby’ Morris.  The buildings were erected by a crew from Allies Construction Company based in Halfway Tree, while the grounds were styled by Craig Collins International Landscape Architecture from Nevis.

On this week’s edition of the SKNIS radio magazine Perspectives, persons involved in heavy trucking touted the boom in the construction industry.

“The change from the sugar industry to the tourism industry has brought a lot of [benefits] for the truckers,” said Kenrick Simmonds, the owner of a small trucking firm. “[There] is more development now due to the change and that creates more work now for the truckers and the guy with the heavy equipment.”

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said Monday that the “Christophe Harbour” development on St. Kitts’ Southeast peninsula has already brought considerable recognition to the island and has begun to generate huge amounts of economic activity.

Prime Minister Douglas, who was in New York for the official announcement of the multi-million dollar tourism project by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group said the “type of up-market tourism that we are now targeting and which this development represents, provides the most potential for the development of spin-off businesses on island, while simultaneously providing more jobs with better wages and salaries without the need for large numbers of hotel rooms, so they bring the maximum revenue to island without a huge detrimental environmental impact.”

Prime Minister Douglas and Minister of State for Tourism, Sen. the Hon. Richard “Ricky” Skerritt were among officials when the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group announced that it will manage a new luxurious 125-room resort with 20 Residences at Mandarin Oriental on the island of St. Kitts in the British West Indies, which will open in 2010. The Group now has a portfolio of five resorts open or under development in the Caribbean region.
