In a continued effort to combat crime on the island, Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry hosted a panel discussion with members of the private sector at the conference room of the Nevis Credit Union at Chapel Street in Charlestown on Thursday, July 24th 2008.

The panellists included Deputy Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Hensley Daniel, Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Ashley Farrell, Legal Advisor, Hon. Patrice Nisbett and Superintendent of Police in Nevis, Mr. Samuel Seabrookes.

In his opening remarks, Premier Parry noted how pleased he was to see so many business owners responding to the call to put an end to the spate of criminal activity in Nevis.  He said, “We do not want business people to be afraid or live in continuous fear of these criminals; we want them to be able to stand up and continue to run their business as usual. We can not in any way make those individuals committing the crimes feel like they have won!”

During the meeting, Mr. Parry articulated several ways in which he thought the business community could assist in stemming the crime wave on the island.  Among these was the idea of having members adopt a school, a community or a child; and create avenues whereby our young people could engage themselves positively and productively.  He reminded the audience that while the government is committed to doing its part, the rest of the society must also play an active role if we are to realize a significant reduction and possible eradication of serious criminal activity on the island.

The Nevis Island Administration led by the Nevis Reformation Party, ended their Second year anniversary week of celebration with a service of Prayer and Thanksgiving at the St. Thomas’ Anglican Church on Sunday, July 13th 2008.

The afternoon service began with a procession of Clergy, Government officials and NRP executives.

Pastor Davidson Morton of the Eden Brown Church of God invoked God’s blessings on the service, while Father Alric Francis of the St. Thomas’ Anglican Church presided over the ceremony. The National Anthem was rendered beautifully on steel pan by Miss Miche’la Parris; and Pastor Sandra Flemming, of the Newcastle Wesleyan Holiness Church, offered welcome remarks and chaired the afternoon’s proceedings.

The congregation set the pace for an afternoon of thanksgiving and spiritual upliftment with its lusty singing of the first hymn, “Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us”.

Scripture readings were done by two members of the Nevis Island Administration– Junior Minister, the Hon. Carlisle Powell and Legal Adviser, Hon. Patrice Nisbett, while songs of encouragement and inspiration were performed by Kurvin Wallace and Sam Corbin.  Not to be out done, the Clifton Methodist Men’s Fellowship kept the congregation clapping and tapping, with a medley of gospel tunes.  The sharing of peace, where Cabinet members got the opportunity to greet members of the congregation, was offered through the sweet sounds of the Humming Bird String Band.

St. Kitts and Nevis says several initiatives taken to deal with crime have been met with success, but the fight is a long and arduous process which will involve the entire society.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said as the twin-island Federation continues to build its new economy, crime could undermine the very foundation of that economy if the society does not combine its resources to combat and eradicate it.

He said his Government full understands the multi-dimensional nature of crime and has re sought to combat it in a variety of ways.

“In respect to the social and educational dimensions of crime, we have been reducing the percentage of dropouts in our school to minimise the pool from which criminals are quite often recruited. We have enhanced the rehabilitation programmes in our prisons and have sought employment for ex-convicts with a view to ensuring that such ex-convicts abandon the life of crime as they are integrated into the society. We introduced PROJECT STRONG to provide nurturing and training for young people at risk of falling into crime. We are establishing a Training Facility at Harris’s to train and rehabilitate young people in trouble with the Law. We have strengthened skills training component of our education system to provide practical and marketable skills to schoolchildren who prefer such training to the traditional academic training,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He said his Government continues to provide enhanced equipment and facilities to the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.
