Over 200 of the NEMA Starter Homes constructed following Hurricane Georges in 1998 will be expanded under the NEMA Housing Improvement Project, financed by the Government of Venezuela.

Minister of Housing, Hon. Cedric Liburd said 458 houses were constructed of which 302 were allocated free to occupants and 146 were sold.

The one-room homes were built to provide shelter for persons whose homes were destroyed or severely damaged as a result of Hurricane Georges.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the completion of the first home under the NEMA Housing Improvement Project, Minister Liburd said of the 458 homes allocated 223 persons requested  assistance to expand their houses and several owners have already sign the necessary agreement with the National Housing Corporation (NHC).
