The consumption tax on a selected list of food and non-food items approved by the Cabinet last month, will be removed with effect from the first of next month, Minister of State with responsibility for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty disclosed on Tuesday.

Minister Carty also disclosed that price control officers have been employed to ensure that the price on these food and non-food items go down so that the consumers benefit.

“Cabinet mandated that effective May 1, 2008, the consumption tax be removed from the following list: Chicken, processed cheese, pasta, corned beef, sardines, tinned tuna, vienna sausage, margarine, ketchup, diapers (for babies and adults), and baby formula. The consumption tax on these items ranges from 15 percent to 22.5 percent,’ said Sen. Carty following Monday’s Cabinet Meeting.

Former St. Kitts – Nevis Sugar Lands Serving The Nation

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas says the former sugar lands are being used for the social development and empowerment of nationals.

Speaking at a ceremony to allocate 80 acres of land to 44 farmers, Dr. Douglas said land has been allocated for agriculture, construction of houses for local homeowners, churches, schools, community centres and new businesses thus providing for entrepreneurship and job opportunities in the development of the national economy.

“Social development means that we are providing the land for housing. You now have the opportunity to own your homes on your plot of land and not paying rent as you did to the planter of the old days. The house lots are now yours, distributed through the National Housing Corporation (NHC) or through the Special Land Initiative of the Ministry of Sustainable Development,” said Dr. Douglas.

He said the land is also being used in the social development and empowerment of the people by providing land for the building of churches.

“We have a lot of churches in St. Kitts and Nevis and some of them still do not have land,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who pointed out that his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government since taking office has been distributing land to several church denominations “so that our people can as a congregation continue to worship God and to give their praises to God.”

St. Kitts – Nevis To Benefit From BNTF Programme

Communities in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis are expected to see more benefits from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)-financed Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF).

The Federal Cabinet, meeting on Monday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, reviewed the management framework of the BNTF, whose objective is to meet basic community needs such as road improvement and educational infrastructure development among other areas.

Cabinet, after careful analysis of the efficiency of the programme made the changes which are geared towards improving the success as well as timeliness in the implementation of BNTF projects.
