New Apron Unveiling St. Kitts Airport

St. Kitts – Nevis — The St. Christopher Air and Seaports Authority (SCASPA), in collaboration with the government of St. Kitts and Nevis, officially unveiled the newly constructed apron at the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport on December 20, 2023 — six days ahead of schedule.

Timely Completion and Modern Upgrades

The rehabilitation project, executed by Kelly Construction, began on November 16, 2023. The airport apron had endured significant wear and tear over the past two decades since its last resurfacing. In addition to resurfacing, the project included improvements to aircraft taxi routes by connecting Taxiways “Bravo” and “Charlie.”

Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, International Transport, Employment and Labour, and Urban Development, the Honourable Marsha Henderson, commended the successful completion of the project, noting that it was delivered ahead of schedule and within budget.

“I stand before you to commemorate a significant milestone in our nation’s aviation infrastructure developments. We gather here to celebrate the unveiling of a new apron at our airport, a moment that marks the culmination of diligent efforts and meticulous planning,” Minister Henderson stated.

The upgraded apron will not only enhance operational safety but will also streamline aircraft movements and improve ground control logistics for airline operations.

Prime Minister Applauds Excellence in Execution

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, praised the teams involved in the successful completion of the project. He emphasized that the collaboration between the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministries demonstrates the value of careful planning and efficient execution in government projects.

“This is an example that all of us should follow — that we should recognize challenges, plan properly for them, and execute effectively,” Dr. Drew said. “What we have produced should be admired by all. I want to thank the Minister, her team, and everyone involved for the excellent work they have done. We are indeed grateful.”

Significance of the Apron Rehabilitation

The apron rehabilitation represents an important investment in St. Kitts’ aviation infrastructure, supporting the nation’s growing tourism and transport sectors. The new apron provides a stronger, safer, and more efficient surface for aircraft parking and movement, ensuring that the airport remains compliant with international standards.

Key improvements include:

  • Reinforced pavement for better load-bearing capacity
  • Upgraded drainage systems to prevent flooding
  • Connection between Taxiways Bravo and Charlie for improved aircraft flow
  • Enhanced lighting and safety markings

These upgrades are designed to optimize airport operations, minimize delays, and accommodate increased air traffic during the island’s busy travel seasons.

Government’s Commitment to Infrastructure Development

The successful completion of the apron project reflects the government’s broader commitment to modernizing St. Kitts and Nevis’ transportation infrastructure. Similar efforts are underway across other sectors, aimed at strengthening tourism, trade, and employment opportunities for citizens.

Minister Henderson reaffirmed her ministry’s dedication to advancing the tourism and aviation industries, ensuring that both remain vital contributors to the nation’s economy and reputation as a premier Caribbean destination.

Celebrating Progress and Partnership

The unveiling ceremony was attended by a distinguished audience, including Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, members of the Cabinet, senior government officials, key stakeholders, and representatives from partnering organizations. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort that made the project’s success possible.

With the completion of the new apron, the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport is now better equipped to serve international travelers and commercial airlines, reaffirming St. Kitts and Nevis’ position as a growing hub for regional and global aviation.
