Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
June 14, 2012 (SKNIS)
The Department of Physical Planning and Environment has declared the month of June “World Environment Month.” This year’s theme, “Green Economy: Does it include you?” underscores the need for everyone to play their part in keeping humankind’s ecological footprint within planetary boundaries.
A number of activities such as an art competition between primary schools and a green technology competition between the secondary schools have been planned to observe the month. Other activities will include school visit and radio presentations. The month of activities will culminate with a parade on the June 22 which will be followed by an exhibition that will showcase entries from the competition at Independence Square, Basseterre. Other stakeholders such as TDC Ltd, Solid Waste Management Corporation, St. Kitts Electricity Company and the Agriculture Department will all be a part of the exhibition showcasing different green technologies.
The Green Economy touches almost every aspect of our lives and concerns our development. Sustainable energy, green jobs, low carbon economies, green policies, green buildings, agriculture, fisheries, forestry and industry. Sustainable tourism, sustainable transport, waste management, water efficiency and all other resource efficiency are all elements involved in the successful implementation of a green economy.
