International Day for Disaster Reduction

The St. Kitts – Nevis National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has planned a week of activities in commemoration of International Day for Disaster Reduction. International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) was commemorated this year under the theme “Knowledge for Life” on October 13th.
The week of activities commenced on Saturday and Sunday with Church Worship. NEMA District Volunteers attended church services with the aim of reinforcing opportunities for disaster management while strengthening collaboration between NEMA and the community.
On Monday 12th October, NEMA staff and stakeholders in partnership with the Ministry of Education, made simultaneous presentations in schools.
Tuesday 13th, the day designated for IDDR, saw a speech delivered by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Mr. Osmond Petty, in which he highlighted the importance of building resilience to mitigate disaster risks.
On Wednesday, NEMA will give back to the community with visits from staff, district manager, community development officer and media to the Cardin Home, The St Christopher Children’s Home, Saddler’s Home for The Elderly, New Horizon Rehabilitation Center and Her Majesty’s Prison.
“Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM)””The Road to Resilience” is expected to be the theme of an interactive edition of Prime Talk on ZIZ on Thursday night from 8:00-10:00 pm.
The week will culminate on Friday 16th with a NEMA staff development retreat.
The International Day for Disaster Reduction was designated by the United Nations General Assembly and was first commemorated in 1989.
