Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry addressed the Public Presentation of the 8th Actuarial Report from the Reform Committee of the Social Security department of St. Kitts- Nevis on Friday, November 23rd at the Four Seasons Resort.

At the beginning of his address, Premier Parry gave a brief historical overview of the St.Kitts”“Nevis Social Security board. “The Social Security board started some 30 years ago and I was the first manager of the Social Security department in Nevis. I can tell you that many people were not in tuned to Social Security at first. In Nevis, it was very hard to get people to be part of Social Security and put into the scheme early on, but today Social Security has grown tremendously. Today the St.Kitts-Nevis Social Security contribution fund is worth EC$800 million and it is one of the best funded Social Security systems in the Caribbean.”

On recounting the obvious foresight of his Party, Mr. Parry discussed how the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) led Nevis Island Administration (NIA) had advocated a Health Care scheme during their campaign. Mr. Parry further stated that now that the NRP is seated in government, plans are underway to execute their campaign promise to the people of Nevis for a better health care system.

Junior Minister in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) with responsibility for Public Utilities Hon. Carlisle Powell, announced Friday November 23, 2007, that he had received information that the water exploration team had found water during their drilling operations at 497 feet below the earth’s surface on the first drill site at Hamilton Estate one day before.
 
“On Thursday afternoon while we were in a Cabinet session, I received the kind of telephone call that we had been waiting on, that BEAD (Bedrock Exploration and Development Technologies) in their first drill site at Hamilton had found some water.
 
“While they had found a limited amount of water earlier during the week, this time they were seeing signs of more water being available and that is due to I would say the hard work of not only the exploration drilling team but of  Dr Hoag as well, who has been here on island with us in Nevis, he has identified the site and has made it his business to be present here during the drilling to make sure that BEAD will be able to deliver on their promise of up to one million gallons of water per day,” he said in an interview with the Department of Information at the drill site.

St. Kitts and Nevis‘ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is among leaders of Commonwealth nations returning home on Sunday following the conclusion of the summit in the Ugandan capital Kampala which ended without binding environmental commitments being reached.

The 16 presidents, 20 prime ministers and 12 delegates from the 53-member bloc of English-speaking countries discussed a range of issues during the three-day meet including environment, governance and human rights.

A resolution reached on the environment, and dubbed the “‘Lake Victoria Declaration on Climate Change,”’ was intended as a follow-up to the Langkawi Declaration on the Environment, issued in 1989 during a Commonwealth leaders’ summit in Langkawi, Malaysia.

In the new declaration, the leaders however toned down their stand, saying that measures to control environmental degradation should not compromise development strategies drawn out by individual countries.

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said Sunday rich countries should compensate poor and Nevis leader as saying that the Commonwealth did not go far enough in pushing rich countries to tackle climate change at its Kampala summit.

A statement issued by the club of mostly former British colonies on Saturday contained only vague language and did not middle income countries negatively affected by climate change.

A Reuters report from Kampala, Uganda, venue for the 2007 Commonwealth Conference quotes the St. Kitts and call for binding targets on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which many members had said they wanted.
