Nevis Geothermal Energy Exploration On Track

Junior Minister in the Ministry of Public Utilities and the Environment, Hon. Carlisle Powell recently disclosed that a team from West Indies Power Nevis Ltd, engaged in the investigation of an alternative energy source for Nevis formally advised the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) that it had completed the exploration phase of the Nevis development works and was now ready to progress to Phase II.
 
Mr. Powell told the Department of Information in a recent interview that Phase I of the programme entailed mapping and exploration work but Phase II would deal with drilling.
 
“The drilling part of it where they actually go down into the earth surface and try to find the geothermal energy…they are waiting on their drill rig as well so you [will] see two rigs operating at the same time in Nevis. 
 
“One searching for water and one searching for the energies that you would use for geothermal power; and so that’s where we are at right now with respect to geothermal power,” he said.

St. Kitts – Nevis To Allocate Land For Farming

The Saint Kitts – Nevis government is to allocate more land for farming to another 45 former sugar workers.

Minister of State with responsibility for Information, Sen. the  Hon. Nigel Carty also reiterated government’s commitment to provide homes to the ex-sugar workers who are in need.

“Two years after the closure of the sugar industry, government conducted another assessment of the progress of the former sugar workers, particularly looking at the employment status of each worker and the economic activities in which they have become involved. A more detailed assessment has also been made of the housing needs of the ex-sugar workers as government immediately intends to assist in the provision of homes for those former sugar workers who are in need,” said Carty in the post Cabinet briefing.

St. Kitts – Nevis Citizens To Get C&W Shares

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has sold its 17 percent share holding in Cable & Wireless (St. Kitts & Nevis) Limited with the agreement that five percent of those shares be sold to residents of the twin-island Federation.

“After extensive negotiations, they (C&W) agreed that they would not exercise their right of first refusal in respect of some 1,661,538 shares of the 5,649,230 shares held by the Government. In other words they were prepared give up their contractual rights in order to allow the Government to offer just under 30% of its shares (or 5% more of the total issued share capital of the company) to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

Speaking at a signing ceremony on Friday, the St. Kitts and Nevis leader noted that the two-year negotiations were meticulous and tireless “to obtain the best possible deal for our people.”
