Caribbean Passport Requirements Postponed

The United States Congress has passed a Federal budget that pushes back by a year passport requirements for Americans on the borders of Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
 
“The passport requirement is the wrong answer to the wrong question,” said Vermont Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy.  “It creates major hassles for law-abiding citizens and communities all across the longest peaceful border in the world,” he added.

“It adds nothing to our security while costing Vermont and our national economy billions in lost commerce,” he continued.  If the budget bill, passed by the U.S. Congress, is approved by President George W. Bush, Americans re-entering the country by land will not need a passport until mid-2009, a year later than planned.

A provision of the major end-of-year budget bill pushes back the plan by the Department of Homeland Security that required passports from border crossers from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean as a way of strengthening national security.

St. Kitts – Nevis Minister Outlines Voter Registration Program

Minister of State for Information Honourable Nigel Carty has called on all eligible voters to confirm their registration at the earliest convenience thus expediting the issuance of the modern National Identification Card.

During an interview with SKNIS’ Director Mahlon Goma, Minister Carty revealed that voters can presently reregister at the Electoral Office on Central Street in St. Kitts ““ next to the Development Bank building ““ and at Chapel Street in Nevis until September 30, 2008.

He noted that the reregistration process refers specifically to persons who are already registered to vote. Once that person presents himself/herself at the Electoral Office, and their identity is confirmed via a valid document such as a passport or drivers license, they will be presented with a form to fill out relevant questions such as name, date of birth and current address. Information regarding parents name and whether the individual has a twin sibling will also be collected to minimize conflicts about ones identity. Voters will have their picture taken at this time.
