Nevis Cabinet members Clean up Pinneys By-pass Road

Nevis Premier Gets His Back Into It Too

The Cabinet of the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) stepped up its campaign to keep Nevis clean, when Ministers of government and members of Cabinet undertook in a clean up exercise along the Pinneys By-pass road on July 12, 2008, during the celebration of the Administration’s second year in office.

Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry told the Department of Information that Saturday was designated Clean Up Day and they were creating a greater awareness to keep the island clean among Nevisians.

“Today is our clean up day. We are trying to create the awareness to keep Nevis clean and so the Ministers of government and members of Cabinet are out here on the by-pass road, which I do believe some attention.

“It seems to me that some people have dumped their garbage on the side of the road and we want to impress the people of Nevis ““ men, women, fathers, mothers and children as well, that we need to keep our island clean for ourselves and because of tourism. I hope that this effort will signal a strong message that the government is serious about the environment and keeping Nevis clean and we hope that this will be an example to the rest of the population,” he said.

Residents of Nevis would this week receive free medical care through the collaborative efforts of the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) Ministry of Health and the Taiwan Mobile Medical Mission (TMMM).

In a brief ceremony to mark the four-day medical initiative held at the Administrative Department of the Alexandra Hospital, on July 14, 2008, Minister of Health in the NIA Hon. Hensley Daniel recorded his gratitude to the TMMM for its generosity.

“We in Nevis, in the government of which I’m apart, we have raised the bar and are working to keep health on a priority. Being in government over the last two years, matters relating to resources for health have taken up quite a bit of our attention and so we want to say to the Taiwanese that we shall find [partner] with our medical professionals and they will advise us and that you can expect from us new ways in which we can collaborate and cooperate towards the resolution of health challenges in Nevis,” Mr. Daniel said.

He spoke of other possible collaborative efforts that could be facilitated between the TMMM and the NIA.

“Outside of a one off visit every year, you can expect from us some sort of formal proposal in which we can address, whether its issues of Human Resource Development, whether its issues of specialised care, we certainly would want to advance the relationship to something which would be done to the benefit of the wider public,” he said.

A EC$50 million low income housing programme represents the dreams and aspirations on hundreds of families in the twin-island Federation.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said the homes when completed will be more than the provision of shelter for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“Rather, it carries the dreams and aspirations of many here in Half Way Tree, in Old Road, Middle Island, Challengers and in the entire country for a brighter future under a caring St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government,” said Dr. Douglas, who added that the 500-homes programme is a further fulfillment of a promise made to the people to enhance the opportunities to access housing in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Prime Minister Douglas reaffirmed his government’s commitment to continue to respond to the demands for housing in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“We believe that it is important to empower people through the acquisition of property. In fact, this EC$50 million housing project that is starting here in Half Way Tree is designed for persons who fall into the lower-income category. The design is aimed at ensuring that homes are affordable to our people,” he said.

Nevis 1 Geothermal Drill Site

Federal Minister with responsibility for Housing, Agriculture, Fisheries and Co-operatives Hon. Cedric Liburd, added to the praise showered on the Nevis Island Administration for its decision to explore the island’s geothermal resources, while he was on an official visit to Nevis on July 11, 2008.

The Minister, who was hosted by Hon Robelto Hector, got a first hand view of the ongoing geothermal explorations at Spring Hill and upper Jessups and registered his satisfaction with the project’s progress.

“I want to commend the NIA the government of Nevis for the work that is being done and I do hope that this project will now help us to combat the serious oil prices that we have in the world and more so that is affecting the small island states like St. Kitts and Nevis. I believe that this is what we need to do in order to challenge the people who own the oil and who are really causing serious problems throughout the world and therefore I want to commend the NIA and I am looking forward for the implementation of this project.

“I visited both sites for the geothermal and the work that is going on and I am really impressed and I am advised that the way things are going here that we can definitely see some movement and some completion and some way where St. Kitts and Nevis could be using geothermal during the year 2009 and I am really pleased with what is happening,” he said.

Environmental Awareness Program Participants

“Today we stand on the threshold of a new era in our development. Many exciting things are about to happen. Economically, the island is poised to take off. We the citizens must be prepared for the opportunities and challenges which will present themselves. What better preparation can there be than that of our youths being afforded the opportunity to be involved in the research, analysis and discussion of the theme for this year’s library programme” Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Library Services Mr. Joseph Wiltshire said.

This came at the closing ceremony of the first session of the 2008 Summer Environmental Awareness Programme on July 11, 2008 at the St. Georges Branch Library.

The session featured high school students from across the island which was held from July 07 to 11 at the St. George’s Branch Library at Croney’s House in Gingerland under the theme “Our Country our people our future”. The sub theme was “Reminiscing the past, relishing the present, charting the way forward”.

Mr. Wiltshire also spoke of the Library’s dedication to the initiative over the years and commended the staff for their efforts.

“I wish to commend the entire staff of our library services for their continued involvement in the development of our most important resource-our people. Year after year the library continues to provide meaningful activities for the nation’s youth and this year is no exception.
