Nevis Government Issues Warning To Illegal Sand Miners

CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (December 21, 2006)
Illegal sand mining continues to be of grave concern to officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning and issued a warning that persons caught involved in this activity, risked prosecution for violation of the environmental protection laws of St. Kitts and Nevis and called for the public’s assistance to apprehend perpetrators.

The warning came from Mr. Ernie Stapleton, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Physical Planning Natural Resources and the Environment, in an interview with the Government Information Service, while on a site visit at Dogwood Estate on the south coast of Nevis, on Thursday December 21, 2006.

Private sector development is slated to receive a major shift in focus and strategy in 2007, to allow it to become the engine of economic growth in Nevis.
 
That disclosure came from Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance the Hon. Joseph Parry, when he delivered the 2007 Budget Address on Monday December 18, 2006 at the Nevis Island Assembly in Charlestown.
 
He said the sector was an important component of his administration’s economic development strategy and must become the engine of growth for its economic strategy to become sustainable.

St. Kitts End Nevis Expects EC$300 Million From Tourism In 2006

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, DECEMBER 18TH 2006 (CUOPM)
Expenditure from tourism is expected to surpass EC$300 million for the first time in its history in 2006.

This disclosure has come from Prime Minister Denzil Douglas and Minister of Finance and Tourism, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas in his 2007 Budget Address in the National Assembly.

Dr. Douglas said the tourism sector has performed well despite major challenges facing the industry and highlighted that the current period is a critical time for making capital out of the opportunity that we had created to become the smallest ever World Cup Cricket venue.

“Much of our expenditure in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture over the past year has been focused on completing our obligations as a World Cup venue, but also to position our Country as a significant player in the sports, cultural and events tourism business,” said the Prime Minister.
