Nevis To Hold Fruit Festival

Charlestown, Nevis (July 22, 2007)

The consumption of local Nevis fruit will be top on the Department of Agriculture’s agenda, when it stages its second annual Nevis Fruit Festival at the Villa in Charlestown on July 26, 2007.
 
The event which is expected to commence from 10am to 5pm follows the Department’s successful inaugural Fruit Festival in 2007 and the first ever Mango Festival in the Organisation of East Caribbean States (OECS) staged in 2005.
 
Communications Officer for the Department Mr Eric Evelyn told the Department of Information recently, that though the activity was designed to showcase the versatility of the fruits cultivated on Nevis and the many products that could be derived from them, the Festival would also indulge in the culinary skills available, a new twist he noted that would be added to Festival.

National Registration Discussed For St. Kitts – Nevis

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis said it is satisfied that plans for the implementation of a new electoral system in the next few months is progressing smoothly and that project managers from Fujitsu, a company out of Barbados contracted to develop the new National Registration System has been meeting with local counterparts.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Sustainable Development, Information and Technology, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty also disclosed that project managers from Fujitsu met Wednesday with officials from the Ministry of National Security, the Statistics Department, the Electoral Office, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, the Registrar and the Ministry of Planning.

He said the officials were involved in discussions about the implementation of the project and that Cabinet mandated that the planning and implementation move swiftly to ensure the completion of the project within the shortest possible time.

Teachers Finish 2nd Component of Reading Program

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis (July 17, 2007)

Sixteen teachers who successfully completed a learning recovery course to help children with dyslexia cope in the classroom have now completed a follow-up course geared at sustaining the advancements made by the children.

The Phonics First Kit focuses on using all the senses as points of association in learning to read. It is being implemented at the grade two level in keeping with the continuum concept of maintaining taught skills.

Elements of this new aspect of the course is based on theories that indicate the is importance for children to be closely monitored by teachers during their first two years at school in order to identify any learning disabilities they may have. While the focus has been dyslexia, all cases or learning disabilities may not be related to dyslexia.

In 2006, the teachers were trained in a programme entitled the “Dyslexia Institute Literacy Programme” which was followed this year with the “Phonics First Programme.”
