Renee Digiulio-Naismith Honored At Camp Opening

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis (July 23, 2007)

The life and vast contributions of Renee Digiulio-Naismith were celebrated in song, dance and poetry at the opening of the Youth Department’s Summer Residential Camp on Sunday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Hon. Sam Condor was among persons paying tribute to Renee at the Zion Moravian Church in Basseterre, who was described as “naturally caring and giving and a servant of God and children.”

That spirit was evident in the region as she used the resources of the Naismith International Basketball Foundation (NIBF) and her links as a travel agent to generate support for the continued growth and expansion of the Department of Youth’s Summer Residential Camp.

Her efforts were successful as she raised tens of thousands of dollars every year in her home state of Chicago, U.S.A. and facilitated the participation of children throughout the Caribbean in the educational camp.

Although much was done, there was more yet to do. That work will now have to be continued by her husband Ian (pronounced Yon) Naismith as Renee died on February 21, 2007 from breast cancer.

“Renee loved kids and she loved St. Kitts,” Ian told SKNIS. “It was her home away from home.”

The Department of Youth in St. Kitts has received thumbs up from the Commonwealth Youth Programme Caribbean Center (CYPCC) for its implementation of a variety of initiatives which target a wide cross section of youth.

During a recent visit to St. Kitts and Nevis, the Regional Director of the CYPCC Henry Charles told SKNIS that he was impressed with the dedication of the Youth Department staff and its corps of volunteers.

“In the last couple of days I have been around observing and talking to them and (watching) their preparations for the annual summer camp and (I) can see the enthusiasm,” he stated. “With that kind of enthusiasm, I believe that all the stakeholders, government, the private sector and private individuals need to recognize that all is not lost. Here, you have a group of people who are dedicated and committed to youth development in the country.”

Charles added that he was moved to see so many teachers give up their summer holiday to work with the young children at the camp. He suggested that residents should emulate this and give credit to the volunteers, and offer assistance as the department works to prepare the next generation to lead successful lives.

Mr. Daniel made the call during a recent interview with the Department of Information while he addressed the expansion of four additional acres and the improved management of the island’s sole landfill at Low Ground. He said the expansion and new fencing, was to provide to meet the needs of greater volume of garbage generated on the island.

“As we improve the management of the landfill, we want you the public to improve the management of your own refuse. If the truck does not come one day, keep it inside and do not allow your garbage to be blown all over. We want you to take a personal responsibility for your garbage disposal and Mrs Lawrence (Manager) and her team will be more than able to assist you.
