Nevis Keeps Promise For A Better Learning Environment

Students of the Charlestown Primary School now have the comfort of two additional classrooms that were constructed to ease overcrowding at the school. The rooms were funded by the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation at a cost of $135,000.
 
Minister of Housing and Land Development and Area Representative for the St. Paul’s Constituency, Hon. Robelto Hector, said during a visit to the school on Monday January 14, 2007, that when the government assumed office in 2006, it became aware of the problem that had existed at the institution and had moved swiftly to address the situation.
 
“We realised what the problem was at the Charlestown Primary School.  The problem of overcrowding which would affect your learning and I am happy that within a short time we were able to provide these two additional classrooms to help you in your learning process.  I am happy that the government together with the Land and Housing Cooperation was able to solve that problem.

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is holding a Press Conference Tuesday afternoon to update the general public on the on-going confirmation process of registered voters.

Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty said the Cabinet on Monday reviewed the progress made in the electoral reform process and was specifically updated on the progress with the confirmation of registered voters.

He said Cabinet was also updated on a preliminary plan to decentralise the confirmation of voters from Basseterre and Charlestown to other parts of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Nevis Island Citizens Proud Of Their Heritage

The Preservation of Nevis’ heritage was the essence of a presentation made by  Premier of Nevis the Hon. Joseph Parry, at the Preview Party to launch an exhibit entitled “Alexandra Hamilton: The Man who Made Modern America”.
 
The event was hosted by the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society (NHCS) on the eve of the birthday of the celebrated Nevisian American statesman on Thursday 10th January, 2008, in the courtyard of his birthplace at the Alexander Hamilton Museum in Charlestown.
 
Premier Parry a former History teacher, told in Nevisians and Americans gathered at the party, that Nevisians were aware of the rich cultural heritage and were proud of it.
 
“I am very happy that Ambassador Ourisman, Ambassador Williams and all the other participants have worked so hard to bring the exhibit here for the people of Nevis and for tourist to see. We are very proud of our heritage and very proud of what Alexander Hamilton has achieved.  As you can see behind me is the building where he was born and where he lived.

One year after the institution of duty concessions for local Saint Kitts – Nevis businesses, several proprietors have indicated that they believe the assistance they received has put them in a better position to be competitive.

On the first anniversary of the opening of his business, one such beneficiary; who preferred to remain unnamed, said that his company had done really well and that without the concessions, launching his business would have been considerably difficult.

Commenting on his hopes for tax breaks in the future another business man, the owner of El Fredo’s ““ a small restaurant ““ said he was not as privileged to learn about the concessions when he first opened his business, but in seeking assistance he was well assisted and referred to the appropriate contacts.
