Nevis Island Rings In Christmas Season

Charlestown, Nevis
December 04, 2007

A wide cross section of Nevisians braved inclement weather last night (December 3rd) to herald the traditional Charlestown Christmas Tree lighting ceremony at the War Memorial Square.

The ceremony was the first in a series of tree lighting ceremonies hosted by the Department of Community Development in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) and held under the patronage of Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Meade, former civil servants and residents of Craddock Road.

Area representative for the St. Paul’s Constituency Hon. Robelto Hector said the event marked the beginning of a season of goodwill, cheer, gift giving and one which was symbolic for Christians worldwide.  However, he reminded Nevisians as they enjoyed the happiness of Christmas, to be mindful of their obligation to each other and to have compassion for those who were less fortunate.

“We must thank our nurses and our doctors and other caregivers; our police our immigration and customs personnel and all our public servants whose jobs will be demanding during the season.  Let us remember to give thanks to God for the blessings we have received throughout the year.  Let us ask Him to continue to spare our lives so that we can continue to live, love and share with each other.

“Let us offer special prayers this Christmas for the poor, the lonely and those who have served us and are now in the twilight of their years,” he said.

Nevis Health Minister Give Thanks For Nevis Eye Care Programme

Charlestown, Nevis
December 3, 2007

Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), the Hon. Hensley Daniel said the Administration would take responsibility for the continuation of Nevis Eye Care Programme which had benefited the people of Nevis since its conception by Dr. George Bresnick 12 years ago.

Mr. Daniel made the comment at the Old Manor Hotel on November 30, 2007, while he addressed workers of the programme who had come together to bid farewell to Dr. Bresnick.  He expressed the NIA’s gratitude to Dr. Bresnick and his team for their contribution to eye care on Nevis and called for Nevisian doctors who specialised in eye care to join the programme.

“Now Dr Bresnick is leaving and what we have to do at the Ministry is to ensure that such a programme, as conceptualised by him and his team, continues not only for the benefit for the people of Nevis but also as a lasting tribute to him.  We must make sure that we can marshal the resources abroad that can be of help in a programme like this.  We have to ensure that our own doctors become part and parcel of the programme because it would help if Nevisian doctors who are ophthalmologists and what ever specialties there are in the eye care join the programme.

Nevis Premier Speaks Out On Land Acquisition Issue

Charlestown, Nevis
December 2, 2007

“Land acquisition has been for the benefit of the people of Nevis”, said Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry, during a radio program on Thursday night. The Premier  aired this point of view on the popular show, “Tell Me”, on Choice FM with hosts Hastings Daniel and Pat Claxton.

Premier Parry noted that under the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), an act was passed where land could be acquired by Cabinet without going to Parliament to debate the issue. “If you look back at the records you will see that I debated the issue stating that it was not a good idea, because the public would not know the full details of the land acquisition. Now we have had to acquire certain lands in order to develop the island and we have had to use the act as it presently is,” he said.

Premier Parry Enlightens People Of Nevis

Charlestown, Nevis
December 3, 2007

Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry addressed the people of Nevis on Choice FM’s very popular Thursday night talk show, “Tell Me” hosted by Mr. Hastings Daniel and Ms. Pat Claxton.

Mr. Parry opened the program by stating that he was very grateful that Nevis was spared during the 2007 Hurricane season. He also said Nevisians need to thank God for not receiving any damage during that afternoon’s earthquake like tremors. “Let us give up a prayer to God for sparing our lives. The hand of God was at work as we have been brought safely through once again.”

The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) has been working extremely hard in an effort to develop many projects and areas on the island of Nevis. For that reason some people perceive the cabinet as being distant.  “We have had to spend so much time working on improving and developing the island, that I have now had to request my ministers, to stay more in touch with the people of Nevis on a personal level.” said Mr. Parry.
