St. Kitts and Nevis’ Minister of State for Tourism has written to the Editor of Sun St. Kitts/Nevis, Mr. Timothy Payne, demanding the withdrawal of an allegation that he considers libelous and an obvious case of irresponsible journalism.

Hospitality Training Appeals To St. Kitts – Nevis Youth

New recruits for the UNESCO Youth Path Project are expressing excitement about the start of Phase 2 in which they will be exposed to entrepreneurship training in the field of tourism and heritage.

Loyola Challenger, one of the new Youth Path students told SKNIS that although she is not 100 percent  certain about her future vocation, she hopes to expand her knowledge about the tourism industry and explore the possibility of working in the field, especially in the area of hospitality.

Secretary General of the National Commission for UNESCO Mr. Antonio Maynard recently announced that the launch of Phase 2 of the UNESCO Youth Path Project would take place at the Ocean Terrace Inn on Tuesday 26th February at 10:00 a.m.

Nevis Onion Production Up

The Department of Agriculture on Nevis announced that it increased its onion cultivation for the 2008 planting season from 7.5 acres in 2007 to nine acres to take advantage of the commodity’s increased world market price.
 
Director of Agriculture Dr. Kelvin Daly on the island told the Department of Information in a recent interview that the Department of Agriculture had toyed with the idea of phasing out onion cultivation in 2007 because it was not cost effective. However, since that year’s harvest, world prices had increased by 100 percent, a decision was taken to increase production.
 
“Since the last crop in 2007 the cost has increased almost 100 percent on the international market it [onion] has become now a more viable product to anything else. So we are increasing the acreage, the price has stabilized around $75-$80 per 50 pound bag and up to last year, it was up to $117 per bag.

Nevis Island A Safer Tourism Destination

Top Cop in the Federation Commissioner Austin Williams hailed the accomplishments of the Nevis Strategic Planning Group in the Nevis Police Division for having faced the challenges associated with development and for the strategies they had implemented which had resulted in four consecutive years of success. Their proactive approach he said had made Nevis one of the world’s safest destinations.
 
The newly appointed Commissioner who is a Nevisian by birth, made the comment at the fifth Police Appreciation Awards 2007 which was held at the Old Manor Hotel, Gingerland on February 16, 2008.
 
“We have witnessed the emergence of new forms of crimes such as copyright violations, money laundering, counterfeiting and other financial and white collar crimes. We are also seeing the transformation of more traditional crimes such as murder, now murder for hire or involving firearms, prostitution is becoming more organized and substance abuse is now more than illicit rum, it has added to the list a large variety of psychotropic substances.
