St. Kitts and Nevis’ hosting of the 4th and 5th One Day International games between the Australian cricket team and the Windies was a success based in large part to the knowledge and experience gained from the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC).

This was highlighted by officials attending a brief presentation organized to mark the contributions of the Chairman of Cricket World Cup St. Kitts and Nevis Ltd. Charles Wilkin QC. Minister of State for Sports Honourable Richard Skerritt noted that Mr. Wilkin’s service was symbolic.

“Charles worked as a volunteer [for CWC]. “There are many of us who were paid to do what we did,” said Minister Skerritt. “Charles represents the hundreds of volunteers locally and the thousands of volunteers across the Caribbean who gave their time to West Indies cricket, to national and regional development, and to sports tourism everywhere. As we wind up Cricket World Cup St. Kitts and Nevis Ltd., one year later, I want to say that your work is much appreciated by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

While presenting a wall-size framed picture of the first ever ODI held in St. Kitts in 2006 between India and the West Indies cricket team, Minister Skerritt explained that the tribute was fitting as Mr. Wilkin played an important role in establishing an international cricket venue in St. Kitts and Nevis.

A call by St. Kitts and Nevis‘ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas at last month’s World Food Security Summit in Rome for the FAO to assist Member Countries with seeds, fertilizer and other inputs to assist the farmers to carry out a rapid production of agricultural products has not fallen on deaf years.

Wednesday the FAO announced the approval of a series of projects in 48 countries for a total value of US$21 million to help small farmers and vulnerable households mitigate the negative effects of rising food and input prices. The projects will provide farmers with agricultural inputs as of this month for an expected duration of one year.

“We need help and we need it immediately,” Prime Minister Douglas told the several Heads of State and Government as well as numerous Ministers of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, water, energy and environment at the Summit.

Dr. Douglas had said there was an urgent need to develop measures to ensure that the adverse effects of the higher food prices on the poor are minimized and that sustainable measures are developed and implemented to reduce poverty.

FAO said the assistance to the 48 countries will be funded by the Technical Cooperation Programme ““ i.e. FAO’s own resources ““ they are part of FAO’s Initiative on soaring food prices (ISFP).

With six countries already benefiting for a total amount of nearly US$2.8 million, FAO’s own funding under the Initiative on soaring food prices now covers 54 countries.

The tourism industry is set for an unparalleled period of growth.

That’s according to St. Kitts and Nevis‘ Minister of State for Tourism, Sen. the Hon. Richard “Ricky” Skerrit.

In an exclusive insight for TravelMole – – the online community for the travel and tourism industry ““ Minister Skerrit detailed the strategy of  “˜synching’ – a move away from the previously dominant sugar trade to a sustainable, responsible tourism industry aligned with a more diverse agricultural policy.

“All the developments currently planned for the island  such as Kittitian Hill, Silver Reef and the massive Peninsula plan are all strands in an overall strategy of ensuring luxury, low impact products across the islands,” he said.

“These will help create local jobs, wealth and career paths for many of our citizens.”
