Challengers Multi-purpose Centre Vital For Youth

The soon to be opened Challengers Multi-Purpose Community Centre is vital to the educational, sporting and human development of the young people in particular and residents in general.

Community and Sports activist Mr. Glenn “Ghost” Phillip said the new facility will be used to house a gym, a library and computer centre as well as resurrect and improve several sporting events in the area.

Expressing thanks and appreciation to the Methodist Congregation for the use of their Church Hall as a meeting place for several decades, Mr. Phillip said it was at that facility that he and several other villagers learned to play dominoes and other games.

“This community centre is modern and what I would like to see taking place from this new community centre is a Challengers football team going to the Premier Division as well as the establishment of a gym. At present, we are sourcing a 65-inch television screen to be used to educate our young people in several sporting disciplines and for other educational purposes,” said Phillip, who has been tapped to succeed the Minister of Health, Community and Social Development and Gender Affairs, Hon. Rupert Herbert, as the St. Kitts – Nevis Labour Party’s Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #4.

Nevis Delegation Tours Geothermal Plant In Iceland

The Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry led a delegation to Iceland from August 17th- 20th, 2008.  The mission was aimed at acquiring first hand experience of geothermal plants at work, holding discussions with geothermal plant operators, while at the same time meeting officials, including the Prime Minister and members of the government and the Icelandic International Development Agency(ICEIDA).  Iceland has had experience with the natural resource for over half a century.

The delegation included the Junior Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Hon. Carlisle Powell, Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ernie Stapleton and Protocol Officer, Ms Angelica Elliott.

At the invitation of the Prime Minister of Iceland, H.E Mr. Geir H. Haarde, Premier Parry and his team attended a luncheon meeting at the Culture House in Reykjavik, where discussions included a team of senior government officials, as well as a member of the ICEIDA, who all congratulated Premier Parry on his bold step of advancing geothermal explorations and development on Nevis.

When the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) 10 commences in Guyana later today, August 22, 2008, a contingent of young masqueraders from Nevis will form a part of the August 22-31 celebration. Minister with responsibility for Culture in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Hensley Daniel said there was a distinct effort placed on masquerades and assured that the group of young persons selected, would make Nevis proud.

The 15 member delegation led by Chairman of the Nevis Cultural Development Foundation Mr. Halsted “Sooty” Byron, left the island on August 21, 2008, and traveled to Guyana as part of a Federal delegation to the Festival, which will be held under the theme “One Caribbean, One Purpose, Our Culture, Our Life”.

“I think the folklore group will form the focus of attention during the CARIFESTA exposition and so we have put together a team of masquerades. Anybody who knows Nevis’ culture would know that the masquerade is at the top of our folklore list and so we have sent a group of young masquerades from across the island.

“We have put a group of them together and I think I should say to the public they have been practicing over the last six weeks preparing for this and so we expect them to do quite well”¦ and I think that our young people who have been selected to participate in the Caribbean Festival of Arts in Guyana, will do Nevis proud and I look forward to hearing great things about their performance he said.

Junior Minister of Trade and Industry, Import and Export and Consumer Affairs in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Dwight Cozier, appealed to members of the public to treat the Supply Office in the Department of Trade on Nevis as a charitable institution and one which worked in the interest of the people of Nevis.

The Minister flanked by his Permanent Secretary Mr. Dwight Morton, Director of Trade Mr. Jermaine D. Stapleton and Business Development Officer Mr. Patrice Wilkin, made the comment during a press conference on August 20, 2008, at the Ministry’s conference room on Government Road. The conference was called to inform consumers of the status of a number of basic food items on the island.

“We hasten to add, however, that the sole purpose of the Department of Trade is to subsidise certain products to the people of Nevis at preferential prices. Nothing at the Department of Trade has any duties or any Custom service charge or any Consumption Tax on the prices of these products. Therefore, all the products that are supplied through the Nevis Supply Office Department of Trade, are supplied under government subside.

“We want to, therefore, appeal to the general public to understand the implications of this and to therefore treat the Department of Trade as an institution that is charitable and therefore working in the interest of the people of Nevis,” he said.

During the Press conference which followed on the heels of earlier meetings with the Nevis Chapter of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and a group of Bakers on the island, the Minister pointed to the availability of flour, sugar, rice and milk and also on horse feed.
