Mrs. Jocelyn Liburd At School Renaming Ceremony

Nevis Premier and Minister of Education, the Hon. Joseph Parry commended Mrs. Joycelyn Liburd at the School Renaming Ceremony on Thursday, October 8th at the Grounds of the Gingerland Primary School, as the school was renamed in her honour.

Premier Parry, in his Feature Address, said Mrs. Liburd has had a distinguished career in education and in guiding the young generation.  Mr. Parry said he was proud that the school will be renamed the Joycelyn Liburd Primary School and suggested that a photograph of Mrs. Liburd should be prominently displayed in the school in recognition of Mrs. Liburd’s outstanding contribution to the school over the years.

The Renaming Ceremony was part of the schools 30th Anniversary Celebrations, which have as their theme: “Providing a sound education for the youths of this nation-past, present and future.”

A boost to Nevis’ Tourism and Financial Service sectors was the objective of Premier Parry’s visit to Bermuda recently.

Bermuda which has a thriving Financial Service and Tourism Market opened their doors to Premier of Nevis, Hon Joseph Parry and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Laurie Lawrence who observed what the Caribbean British Colony has done to reach that plateau.

While in Bermuda, Premier Parry met with Premier and Minister of Tourism in Bermuda, Hon. Dr. Ewart Brown, Assistant Director of Tourism, Jasmin C.Smith, Financial Secretary, Pamela Burrows and Economist, Husain Durham.

Premier Parry and Premier Brown discussed important sectors of Tourism such as:  finance, Administrative, Regulatory, Promotional services, Sales and Marketing. Premier Parry visited with various hotel properties such as 9 Beaches and a number of other mid-market and upscale properties.

Premier of Nevis and Area representative for the St. Thomas Parish Hon. Joseph Parry joined the Department of Social Services on October 09, to laud the efforts of Mrs. Luella Budgeon of Jessups Village. She was honoured as part of Nevis’ celebration of International Seniors Month 2008, for her invaluable contributions to the villages of Jessups, Cotton Ground and the community of Nevis.

The Premier referred to the 78 year old grand mother as a strong, kind, determined, loyal and good Christian person and someone he was proud of.

Mr. Parry recalled her having worked as a small business woman who sold “sweet drink” up till recently but more so remembered her as a survivor of the ill fated MV Christina which sank off Nevis in 1970 and the assistance she rendered to others then.

“She was on the Christina and her then husband was entangled in the ropes and she entangled him, so he to was saved and is alive today. Thank God for the life he has given her,” he said.

The Department of Utilities has been making “an all out effort” to repair damages caused by a fire to control panels and two generators at the Needsmust Power Station on October 2.

At a press conference on Thursday, Minister of Utilities Honourable Dr. Earl Asim Martin said the briefing ““ which was the second in a seven day span ““ was designed to give the media and the public a greater understanding of the issues and a tentative timeframe as to the resolution of the problem.

“When we met last week, I [noted] that we were actually generating 15 megawatts of electricity [after the fire],” he said, which is considerably less than the 24 megawatts needed to accommodate the demand for power during peak hours. “We also indicated that, at that point we were working [to bring another] Caterpillar engine online to provide additional capacity to the system.”

“I am pleased to report that the Caterpillar is online and is, providing 2.5 additional megawatts of electricity at this time,” Minister Martin said.
