It is getting tougher to reach St. Kitts and Nevis by air.

High fuel prices may force a second airline out of the Caribbean market less than two months prior to the onset of the traditional tourism season, which could have a major and unwelcome impact on the number of visitors reaching the Federation.  Carib Aviation officials have publicly said the company will cease flight operations on Sept. 30 and close down altogether on Oct. 5, but sources in the firm say the decisions are not final.

Other company officials, who refused to allow their names to be used, also said the situation remains flexible.

Should Carib Aviation shut down, it will severe the air link between Antigua and St. Kitts and Nevis. This has been a traditional route used by tourists from the United Kingdom and Europe.

Carib currently flies as a subcontractor for LIAT in the Federation. No one at LIAT was available to discuss future plans if the Carib closure goes forward.

Carib’s announcement comes just two weeks after XL Airways announced that it was ceasing flights between six Caribbean destinations and London. XL carried about 7,000 passengers to St. Kitts each year.

UK’s Excel Airways Cancel St. Kitts Flights

Excel Airways has announced that they will cease operations on all of their six Caribbean routes for this coming winter due to adverse market conditions. XL currently provides airlift services to St Kitts, Antigua, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada and Tobago from London. The weekly flight from Gatwick will fly for the last time on Monday November 3rd 2009.

XL.com Managing Director Martin Lock said “The Caribbean routes’ lack of profitability has been a challenge for XL Airways over recent months.

The main factors causing this are the extremely high fuel prices which result in long haul routes bearing very high costs compared to 6 months ago.

There has also been a serious downturn in the UK economy leading to lower demand for flights and holidays and again, because of their higher prices, the long haul routes from the UK are seeing even more of a softening of demand than short haul.

This weaker demand has lead to XL Airways having to keep our prices competitive as we try and attract more customers.

Delta Airlines Doubles Second-bag Fee To $50.00

Delta Flights To St. Kitts

Delta Flights To St. Kitts – Nevis

ATLANTA – Delta Air Lines Inc., the nation’s third-largest carrier, will double its charge for checking a second bag on a domestic flight as part of a set of fee increases to help offset the high cost of fuel.

The Atlanta-based carrier said Tuesday that the changes will apply to customers who purchase a ticket on or after Thursday for travel on or after Aug. 5.

Fee changes include an increase from $25 to $50 to check a second bag for domestic travel. Fees for specialty items that require special handling, such as surfboards or ski equipment, will increase on domestic and international flights, Delta said.

First Class, BusinessElite and Medallion customers will still be able to check up to three bags at no charge, the airline said.

Delta said that as fuel costs remain high, it believes revising its fee structure for excess bags and specialty items is essential to generate the necessary revenues to offset its higher costs.

Delta currently does not charge passengers for checking a first bag on domestic flights. It has said it is studying a decision by several other major carriers to impose that fee.

The St. Kitts Marriott is introducing reduced room rates and American Airlines discounted airfares for Florida residents.

According to Centredaily.com Business section, “due to economic hardship and increasing gas prices, travel has become a luxury most Americans cannot afford.”

In response to the demand for affordable travel options, the St. Kitts Marriott Resort has reduced room rates for Florida residents to US$99 per night and supported an initiative with American Airlines to offer discount airfare for travel from Miami.

“Concerns about the economy and increases in airfare costs are making it impossible for travelers, even for Florida residents who are so close to the Caribbean,” said Simon Bell, Director of Marketing for the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, Simon Bell.

“This sale will provide those residents with an affordable Caribbean vacation option, despite the difficult times,” said Belle.
