Basseterre, St.Kitts (June 8th 2007)

Three top bands in St.Kitts – Nevis are joining forces this weekend, Saturday June 16th, to stage a massive soca party at one of the islands leading night clubs.
 
Club Kactus, which can easily be called St.Kitts Club,Party and Fete central, will no doubt live up to it’s reputation as the #1 night spot in St.Kitts – Nevis this upcoming weekend when it plays host to SOCA MADNESS 2007. The SOCA fete is expected to be the unofficial kick off  of, and warm-up for the 11th annual St.Kitts Music Festival. The madness is being organized by Island Vybz Entertainment who brought you the Night of the Stars Old Years night ball at the Angelus Hotel this past carnival. The ball was hugely successful and was one of the highlights of St.Kitts-Nevis carnival 2006-07.
 
The fete will be headlined by top soca bands and artistes including current and 5 time road march champions the Small Axe Band , former road march Champions the Grand Masters and the hottest, newest band in the Caribbean d’Vybz Band, who burst onto the scene late last year and has already become a household name in the Caribbean.

New York, NY (June 6, 2007)

To kick off Caribbean Week 2007 in New York City, the Empire State Building will brighten up the city skyline by filling it with the colors of the Caribbean from June 8 ““ 10, 2007.
 
For the second consecutive year, the Empire State Building will illuminate the sky with yellow symbolizing the warm sunshine (on top), green representing the lushness and swaying palm trees (in the middle), and blue symbolizing the Caribbean Sea (on the bottom).  Caribbean Week 2007, arranged by the Caribbean Tourism and Development Company (CTDC), will celebrate the spirit and hospitality of the Caribbean through cultural presentations, sports tournaments (cricket and volleyball), chef demonstrations, vacation special offers and exciting events throughout New York City from June 9 ““ 17, 2007.
 
“The lighting of the Empire State Building is a great tribute to Caribbean people everywhere, as New York is home to millions of persons of Caribbean descent,” said Hugh Riley, one of Caribbean Week’s main organizers.  “The goal of the weeklong festivities has always been to provide New York’s five boroughs with a taste of Caribbean culture and spirit, and with our colors proudly displayed high above New York City, our presence will surely make a bold statement, as well as emphasize the importance of June as Caribbean-American Heritage Month.”
 
Soaring 1,454 feet above Midtown Manhattan, the Empire State Building is the World’s Most Famous Office Building.  With new investments in infrastructure, public areas and amenities, the Empire State Building has attracted first-rate tenants in a diverse array of industries from around the world.  The skyscraper’s robust broadcasting technology supports all major television and FM radio stations in the New York metropolitan market. The Empire State Building was recently named America’s favorite building in a poll conducted by the American Institute of Architects.

Charlestown, Nevis (May 29, 2007)

Chairman of the St. James Festival Committee Mr. Pearlivan Wilkin hailed Winfest 2K7 as a success. The Whit weekend community festival with the theme “Celebrating with Action Windward Fest 2007″, was the first in what is expected to be an annual parish activity.
 
“In my opinion it went generally well.  It was incident free and I think it was a very good weekend. The festival brought people together and stimulated economic activity, they were two of the five main objectives we wanted to meet this year,” he told the Department of Information on Tuesday May 29, 2007.
 
The festival was sponsored by telecommunications provider (Chippie) UTS Cariglobe and was held under the patronage of Mr. Nathan “Supper” Jeffers a distinguished senior citizen of the St. James Parish.
 
According to Mr. Wilkin, the Committee hoped to achieve more strategic goals to revitalise and penetrate the Parish’s dying culture and heritage and to provide potential contestants for Nevis’ annual Culturama Festival in successive festivals.
 
Meantime, at Winfest’s official opening ceremony at the White Hall Basketball Court on Friday May 25, 2007, Minister of Culture the Hon. Hensley Daniel noted that the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), had taken a decision to organise the parish festivals to give persons additional opportunities for self expression.
 
“The thinking is that the community festivals must provide the spirit for Culturama and if the people are accustom to share in the culture diversity of their respective parishes then we can expect a greater showpiece during Culturama and that is one of the reasons, the aim being to strengthen the engagement and involvement in Culture at the community level so that we can have van improved Culturama throughout the year,” he said.

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis (May 24, 2007)

The Special Olympics movement in St. Kitts and Nevis received a renewed commitment from Digicel to sponsor its ongoing programmes.

Country Manager Donovan White dialed in his company’s support for the organization on Thursday by signing an official document. The signing was witnessed by Clarice Cotton, the National Director of Special Olympics and Permanent Secretary of Sport Lloyd Lazar. During the National Special Olympics Games on Tuesday, Mr. White explained that Digicel international has a strong relationship with Special Olympics.

“We will continue to lend our support to this progressive and well needed movement not just in St. Kitts and Nevis, but all across the world because Special Olympics is indeed a special thing for some very, very special people,” he said. “The chairman and owner of Digicel Mr. Dennis O’Brien was the chairman of the last Special Olympic Games and he will be the deputy chairman of the organizing committee for this Olympic Games so Special Olympics for us means a lot.”

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis (May 24, 2007)

The population of St. Kitts and Nevis is expected to increase by several hundred over the course of the next few days as a number of sports-tourism related activities take place.

The Leeward Islands Masters Cricket Tournament begins on Friday. The three-day contest features teams from Antigua, Anguilla, St. Maarten, St. Croix, Nevis and host St. Kitts. Matches will be played at the Cayon and Conaree Sporting Complex. Team members and their supporters begin arriving today.

Carol Clarke, Sports Tourism Officer in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture, told SKNIS that the ministry is proud to be associated with this annual event which is being hosted in the Federation for the first time. Matches begin tomorrow and conclude on Sunday with the finals.
