Nevis Moves To Protect Bathers On Pinneys Beach

Charlestown, Nevis
October 03, 2007

Manager of the Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority (NASPA) Mr. Spencer Hanley said apart from NASPAs thrust to promote Nevis as a yacht destination, the Authority had gone to great lengths to protect sea bathers on one of the island’s most popular beaches Pinneys Beach, through the installation of EC$600,000 worth of swim buoys and moorings and the prohibition of fishing in the designated swim area.

He told the Department of Information on Tuesday September 02, 2007 that the move to position marked areas with buoys from Double Duce to Sunshines Beach Bar and Grill and a smaller area in front of the Four Seasons Resort with buoys would no longer be available for fishers to fetch bait.

In the past, Fishers were able to cast their nets to catch smaller fish which would be used for bait. However, the practice Mr. Hanley said would also attract larger fish and it was for that reason the practice would no longer be tolerated by the Authority in the marked swimming areas.

The construction process at the Bird Rock athletic stadium remains on schedule.

That assurance was given by Project Manager Wycliffe Morton Jr. He was at the time updating Minister of State with responsibility for Sports Hon. Richard Skerritt during a site visit. Minister Skerritt was joined by other government officials as well as representatives of the St. Kitts Amateur Athletic Association and members of the local organizing committee for the 2008 CARIFTA Games.

“We do not foresee any problems in (completing) the project on time,” Morton reported. “All of the lead times that we have were anticipated and we expect that the first set of heavy material (such as steel) will arrive on site in the next two weeks.”

Warner Park Redevelopment Project Moving Forward

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
September 12, 2007

Phase one of the Warner Park redevelopment project is now complete, signaling an end to mass construction at the Federation’s premiere sporting facility.

The completion of the football stadium was the final activity under this Phase, which also saw the transformation of the cricket field to a world class multipurpose complex where major international events can be hosted.  This was the case when first round matches of the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 11th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival were staged at the facility earlier this year.

“Government is continuing to fulfill its pledge to provide modern multipurpose entertainment and sporting facilities,” Acting Director of Sports Dave Connor told SKNIS. “The provision of modern facilities will serve to further develop our athletic prospects and encourage healthy lifestyle activities such as exercise among our population.

“It also expands the knowledge base of local construction workers who build these facilities and adds to the infrastructural development of the island,” Connor added, noting that the media exposure the country receives for hosting regional and international sporting events is of tremendous value.
