St. Kitts – Nevis Athletes Performed Well
Charlestown, Nevis
May 07,, 2009
This holiday weekend proved a busy one for the athletes and friends of the Federation, as some of the island’s best runners took on the Church Ground Marathon and other sports events.
Miranda Fellows defended her title as the reigning queen of the event’s women’s category, while Kristina Stoney took on the challenge with a very credible 4th place in her category, with a time of 5:59:12. Stoney also had an amazing 4th best time on the bike leg, despite getting a flat and having to make the repairs herself.
Meanwhile, in Grenada, Reggie Douglas and James Weekes participated in the Grenada International Triathlon where they came up against athletes from all around the region, and internationally. After a very hard fight with some more advanced swimmers and overcoming small mechanical problems, Reggie took 1st place in the Olympic distance while James stomped the competition with a blistering 1:15:07, taking 1st in the Sprint distance. It was really a good day for Nevis.
Further afield, St Kitts & Nevis first female pro cyclist Kathryn Bertine spent five days racing in the Tour of Gila with the women’s pro team. She was alongside the likes of Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer who were preparing for the Tour of Italy. Kathryn’s team took a very credible 5th place and she took 25th place in the individual time trial.
In Europe, Janine Herweijer, the reigning Nevis triathlon champion, was busy taking the top spot in a 42km time trial, where she posted a fantastic 1:05:30 in her St. Kitts-Nevis skin suit, which she wore with pride.
As Nevis’ senior athletes continue to make their mark on the world scene, Nevis Cycle team organizer, Mr. Winston Crooke continues to celebrate the development of Nevis’ young cyclists, with a series of races that will lead to the first ever Junior National Cycling Championships, to be held over the weekend of June 20-21.
