General Elections To Be Under Scrutiny For Fraud

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
December 29, 2009 (CUOPM)

The role of the Organisation of American States (OAS) in observing the upcoming general elections was discussed briefly on Monday.

Deputy Secretary General of the Washington-based OAS, His Excellency Albert Ramdin, in Basseterre to attend the signing of the new OECS Treaty, paid a courtesy call on St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

Prime Minister Douglas told the Communications Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister (CUOPM) that during the discussions he was informed that the OAS intends to send 11 observers to monitor the general elections whenever it is called.

In his recent address dissolving the National Assembly, Prime Minister Douglas announced he was informed that the Commonwealth, CARICOM and OAS had accepted his invitation to observe the poll.

The three organisations observed the 2004 poll and concluded the elections had been free and fair, and free from fear.
