Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
March 21, 2006
St. Kitts and Nevis is to seek membership on the United Nations Economic
and Social Council.
Government said membership would “give the country the opportunity to
advance the agenda of Small Island Developing States on sustainable
development, particularly at this challenging time in our own development,”
said Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty.
In a post-Cabinet statement, Mr. Carty said that the Federal Cabinet of St.
Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas had approved for
St. Kitts and Nevis, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to seek
membership on the United Nations Economic and Social Council for the period
2009 to 2011.
The Council’s mandate is to promote higher standards of living, full
employment and economic and social progress, cultural and educational
cooperation, and universal respect for human rights.
