Government is making about 1500 more acres of land available for agricultural development.
Cabinet agreed on Monday to transfer 167 cane fields totalling nearly 1470 acres of land to the Department of Agriculture for swift distribution to crop and livestock farmers.
The transfer of land to the Department of Agriculture means that the department will be directly responsible for the management of lands for agriculture, thereby reducing delays in satisfying the demands by farmers.
The government is aware that a number of farmers have made application for land for farming and it is hoped that their needs can be met speedily by this new allocation scheme.
The Land Distribution Committee updated the Cabinet on the distribution of land for agriculture after a number of field trips between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Sustainable Development.
Cabinet recalled that agricultural output doubled between 2000 and 2008, and looks forward for a further doubling in output over the next five years.
