CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (FEBRUARY 5, 2007)
Tourism Week 2007 on Nevis culminated with the annual Tourism Awards Gala on Saturday February 3rd at the Four Seasons Resort. The event hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, sought to honour persons and business impacted the tourism sector on the island. Seven persons received awards in the various categories, winning from a field of 25 nominees for their contribution to tourism.
By the end of the event, Carib World Travel and Nisbett Plantation Beach Club received of two awards each. Winning the Corporate Partner award was Carib World Travel, managed by Ms. Jeanette Grell-Hull with Mrs. Sandra Lee also of Carib World Travel taking the award for Other Allied Services (worker). Hotel Employee of the Year went to Mr. Wilbert “Dan” Perkins while 82 year old Mr. George Mills of the Nisbetts Plantation Beach Club received the award for Long Service. Receiving the tourism award for Taxi Operator of the Year was Mr. Ruel Sargeant, while Ms. Roxanne Brookes-Daniel cupped the award for Hotel/Management of the Year for the Four Seasons Resort.
In other allied services (establishment) Mr. Lynell and Mrs. Earla Liburd of Sunrise Tours captured the award.
Special awards went to Winward Airlines (WINAIR), Mr.Alfred James, Nevis Police Force, Bridal Guide Magazine and Mr. Theodore Kelly.
Meantime, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Mr. Tyrone O’Flaherty said that this year’s theme focussed on the contribution of the small businesses and the impact they made to society and the economy.
“There is still a lot to be learnt in terms of what small business do. Here are a lot of small business companies that year after year, day in day out, toil very hard in terms of getting their own footing, but also to put our tourism on a good footing and it was a deliberate choice that we make this year for small businesses,” he said.
Tourism Week 2007 commenced on January 27th with the theme “Tourism is our Business”.
