“Phenomenal, exemplary, most enriching and enlightening”¦” These comments were indicative of the praise showered on the recent Principals’ Leadership Training Seminar, at the Red Cross Building in Charlestown, by participants.

The intensive three-day workshop, which ran from September 22-24, was organised by the Ministry of Education, and was facilitated by Mrs. Phyllis Thorne, Manager of Public Information at Con Edison, the local utility in New York City, where she is company liaison to community and government leaders and non-profit organizations in Brooklyn. A Con Edison employee for many years, Mrs. Thorne has also managed the Corporate Headquarters, where she created and implemented the strategy for the company’s support to education.

Participating in the seminar were Principals and aspiring Principals, Education Officers and Sector Heads of the Department of Education.

In his address to the participants, Premier Joseph Parry reminded them that learning included clarification of the distinction between leadership and management through a critical examination of purpose, context and functions.

The seminar facilitated a clinical and comprehensive look at a diverse range of topics relating to leadership and management. Among the topics were: Creating and Sustaining Effective Teams; The Power of Intention- Aligning Values and Actions and What Leaders Really Do.

Participants spoke in glowing terms of the session, all agreeing that they are now better equipped to effect change within their organisations and that the seminar should be repeated for other groups of management personnel.
