The 25th celebration of independence for St. Kitts and Nevis would be the focus for the 19th Annual Environmental Awareness Programme.
The three week programme would this year be facilitated under the theme “Our country, our people, our future” with the sub-theme “Reminiscing the past, relishing the present, charting the way forward.” The programme is tailored towards the development of national pride and patriotism, sensitisation and awareness of the Federation’s progress as an independent nation, to display creative abilities through various art forms and to interact with their peers from other schools.
Librarian at the St. Georges Branch Library, Mrs. Yvette Liburd, told Department of Information in an interview on Wednesday June 18, 2008, that the children would be actively engaged during the sessions.
“The children will be engaged in illustrated and interactive lecture discussions, songs, art and craft, field trips, drama, quizzes, poetry and essay competitions, song writing competition, research projects and cookery exercises,” she said.
This year’s programme will feature topics such as the road to Independence, our Independence: national symbols and nation builders, our accomplishments since Independence and charting the way forward.
Mrs. Liburd appealed to parents to get their children to participate in the summer programme.
“I am appealing to the parents to get the children registered. It is going to be a very exciting three-week programme and we are trying to get the children gainfully employed during the first part of their vacation and so we are encouraging the parents to get the children registered,” she said.
The summer sessions will be conducted in three parts. Secondary school participants aged 12 to 16 years will have their sessions at the Gingerland Public Library from July 07 to July 11 2008. Primary school students aged nine to 12 years and those aged five to eight years will meet at the Charlestown Secondary School from July 14 to July 18, 2008 and July 21 to July 25, 2008 respectively.
She added that registration could be done at the St. Georges Branch and Charlestown Public Libraries as well as the primary and secondary schools on the island.
Mrs. Liburd recorded her appreciation to the sponsors of the programme but appealed to others in the private sector to support the event.
“I want at this time to thank the [Nevis] Credit Union for their generous contribution over the years. Additionally, I would like to thank the Embassy of the Republic of China for their contribution as well and I’m also appealing to other businesses to assist us financially in making this venture a success,” Mrs. Liburd said.
