The Drag Racing facility at Butlers began to take shape Friday morning (November 28) in readiness for Speed Invasion, a first ever three-day Drag Racing event hosted by the Nevis Drag Racing Association in collaboration with the Nevis Island Administration (NIA).

Interests as far away as St. Maarten, Antigua, Saba and closer to home St. Kitts are slated to join racers from Nevis in eliminations on Saturday and the final races on Sunday.

The St. Maarten contingent was the first to arrive on Nevis and Minister of Sports Hon Hensley Daniel accompanied by Hon. Robelto Hector and Legal Advisor Mr. Patrice Nisbett welcomed the visitors. He thanked them for having consented to participate in the event.

“Please convey to your association warmest regards and our very best wishes and say to them we thank them for coming to participate in this tournament at such an early time, given the fact that we [NIA] have just been operational for two months.

“That’s important because when we have sister islands engaging with us it underscores the rational for what we are doing and says to the rest of the people we are on the right track,” he said.

He said Drag racing in Nevis was gradually moving upwards and onwards and different variations would be added to the race over time.

The Minister asked the public to support the race and to be on their best behaviour.

In response Mr. Powell urged the public to be a part of the races.

“I think the public should come out its going to be something very exciting that you have never seen. you are going to enjoy yourself we have some scores to settle with Antigua they are going to be here and it is going to be very, very exciting so come out and enjoy yourself,” he said.

The Antiguan Drag Racing contingent was the second contingent expected to arrive on the island.
