Nevis Rolls Out Red Carpet For Marylebone Cricket Club

The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) rolled out its welcome mat for the United Kingdom (UK) Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on Tuesday 18, March with Cocktails at the Mount Nevis Hotel. 
 
Sports Minister Hon. Hensley Daniel conveyed the sentiments of the NIA that sports broke down barriers and promoted interpersonal and international relationships. He added that the NIA’s thrust was to use cricket to chart a new course for young people on Nevis.
 
Mr. Daniel referred to the adage that cricket was a gentleman’s game and crime and drugs were against the ideals of cricket.  “I believe sports builds character and personality among young people and that sports through cricket would help young people to reject anti social behaviour,” he said.

St. Kitts – Nevis Upgrades Sports Facility

Athletes and sports enthusiasts in St. Peter’s and nearby areas will soon be able to enjoy upgraded facilities at the community sporting complex.

At a ceremony on Tuesday, Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency John Liu delivered a cheque for just under US $400,000.00 to fence the ground and to enhance the lighting and seating features at the St. Peter’s Sporting Complex. These upgrades are to be completed under phase two of a rehabilitation project.

Phase one saw the construction of a pavilion which will offer covered seating, dressing rooms, a bar and toilet facilities when completed. The Republic of China (Taiwan) also assisted with this phase with a donation of US $230,000.00.

The Cruise Ship Regatta Visits St. Kitts – Nevis

The 671-passenger vessel “Regatta” was berthing Wednesday at Port Zante after ground swells made it unsafe to make its scheduled call to Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands.

According to the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority, the Regatta “arrived at the Pilot Station this morning at 6:45 and was successfully berthed by one of SCASPA’s  pilots with the assistance of the Berthing Officer.”

Head, Corporate Affairs and Public Relations, Delcia Bradley-King said SCASPA’s Marine Department was contacted on Tuesday and indicated to the agents that the cruise ship could be accommodated.

IOC President Assured Of St. Kitts – Nevis’ Stand Against Doping

President of the International Olympic Association (IOC) Dr. Jacques Rogge was assured of the firm position of St. Kitts and Nevis against doping in sports when he visited the Federation on the weekend.

This assurance was given during a meeting at Government Headquarters when Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas presented President Rogge with a copy of the Instrument of Ratification by the St. Kitts and Nevis Government to the UNESCO International Convention Against Doping in Sports. The original document was signed in February by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and forwarded to the relevant body.

The Prime Minister noted that the Government and people were proud to welcome the IOC President on his inaugural visit and explained that the visit should serve as inspiration to athletes contesting the March 21 to 24 CARIFTA Games slated for Bird Rock.
