St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas has lauded Guyana’s efforts to ensure that other Caribbean countries also benefit and expressed hope that other Heads of Government would support plans to raise funds to tackle HIV/AIDS in the region.

A press release from Georgetown printed in the Starbroek News said Prime Minister Douglas lauded the efforts of Guyana’s Minister of Health Dr. the Hon. Leslie Ramsammy’ to include other states besides Guyana and Haiti as they have set the stage for middle income regional states to receive assistance.

Guyana was also recognised as the first country in the region to provide free anti-retroviral treatment for persons living with the infection and continues to be one of few states to offer such a programme.

However, it has been noted that stigma and discrimination against persons living with the disease continues to be an area of concern in the Caribbean.

Dr. Douglas who is lead Head responsible for Health and Humanity Services in the Caribbean Community made these comments at the recent CARICOM Summit.

Lawmakers in St. Kitts and Nevis are expected to approve a minor amendment to the Proceeds of Crime Act making money laundering an extraditable offence.

Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas will seek legislative approval on Thursday to ensure that St. Kitts and Nevis is not a safe haven for persons who perpetuate offences of this type.

The Proceeds of Crime (Amendment) No. 3 Bill, 2008 is one of two bills in the name of the Minister of Finance.

The other is the Money Services Business Bill, 2008, which was given its first reading on June 18th.

It seeks to make provisionsfor the licensing and regulation of the business of the transmission of money or monetary value in any form. Cheque cashing, currency exchange and the issuance, sale or redemption of money orders or traveller’s cheques as well as the business of operating as an agent or franchise holder of any of these businesses.

Acing Minister of National Security, Immigration and Labour, Dr. the Hon. Earl Asim Martin will seek to amend the Anti-terrorism Act by providing a definition for the term “forfeited property.”

Upgrades Planned For St. Kitts Sporting Facilities

Plans for the upgrade of the sporting facilities in Half Way Tree and Challengers will significantly enhance community and athletic development for residents.

This was the underlying message at a brief ceremony at the Office of the Prime Minister on Wednesday. At the event, Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency Rong Chuan Wu presented Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas with two cheques for the necessary construction work at the facilities. US $284,000.00 was donated for use at the Half Way Tree facility, while US $115,000.00 was allocated to Challengers.

Ambassador Wu noted that the donations represent his country’s “humble contribution [to] the progression of the infrastructural [development] in St. Kitts and Nevis.” He explained that since assuming duties a few months ago, there have been important discussions regarding increased cooperation on various ventures, particularly sports and agriculture.

Prime Minister Douglas thanked the Ambassador for his close collaboration with the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis in realizing their dreams and aspirations.
