The VIP Lounge at the St. Kitts’ Airport was the venue for yet another welcome home ceremony for members of a national track and field team that flew the flag of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis high in the international arena.
The trio of Adrian Williams, J’Anthon Silliday and Noha Herbert contested the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games held in the Isle of Man from September 07 to 13 earning respectable finishes in each event. These include a semifinal spot in the Women’s 200 meters for Herbert who unfortunately could not compete due to injury. Silliday earned an eighth place finish in the Men’s Javelin Throw Final while his teammate Williams captured the Bronze Medal for his third place finish in the same event.
Minister of Sport Honourable Glenn Phillip, President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Olympic Committee Alphonso Bridgewater and executives of the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletic Association headed by President Glen Jeffers shared the moment with proud family and friends eager to embrace the young athletes.
Minister Phillip noted that the ceremony is a result of a strong sense of commitment that is demonstrated by Government, by SKNAAA, by SKNOC as well as by the athletes themselves and their parents.
He recalled that on occasions, he witnesses Silliday practicing, sometimes even without a coach present, and commended him. He also credited Herbert for reaching as far as she did in the semifinals and praised the support structure built by her parents. Adrian Williams, who is from Nevis, was singled out.
“Adrian Williams is the third best junior athlete at Javelin in the entire Commonwealth. I do think this is a major achievement,” the Minister stressed.
Vice President of the SKNAAA congratulated the athletes and thanked the SKNOC as well as the Government for continued support.
