Good evening Nevisians and all those who are listening to Choice and NNC and VON.
Monday, the third of September all of the primary schools and the two high schools on Nevis commence the school new year. I must say that before the start of the school I met with most of school heads and at least one of the high school heads. We discussed a number of matters, including discipline in the schools and gang related crimes.  I express the need for the teachers to be vigilant and to work with the parents to encourage good discipline in their children and to also get them out of these gangs.
 
On the island of Nevis, it appears to me, that everywhere children in some primary schools and the high schools are becoming obsessed with the red ribbon movement and the blue ribbon movement. It makes no sense it leads to misbehaviour, it leads to fights and a breakdown in discipline. I am calling on the parents to work with the teachers to get the children to concentrate on work and to concentrate on good behaviour and stay away from these gangs.

Minister of Agriculture Hon Robelto Hector urged farmers to take advantage of training workshops offered by the Agriculture authorities on Nevis. He said the transfer of knowledge to would serve them for a lifetime.
 
The Minister made the comment at the start of a workshop for farmers in the area of corn production on Tuesday September 04, 2007 at the Taiwanese Mission in Cades Bay. The one day event which was attended by over 10 farmers was a collaborative effort of the Nevis Department of Agriculture and the Taiwanese Mission. 
 
“I want to ask farmers to take this training workshop very seriously because the knowledge you gain here is the knowledge you would be able to impart to others. It is the knowledge that brings to you more money. Today, we are rather specific about extending knowledge about corn production. In extending knowledge, I am hoping that farmers would understand that this knowledge is for a lifetime. The farmer who succeeds is always the farmer who is wiling to try something new.
 
“I am always happy that what is done at the Department or at the Mission trickles down to the farmer. I am hoping that before the years is out I would be invited again to a farmer’s plot which would be a true testimony of what you learned here,” he said.

The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is ranked fifth among the 10 richest independent countries in the Caribbean.

Aneki.com, a well-known independent and popular Canadian Web site, which derives its information from numerous sources, including United Nations agencies and the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency’s World Factbook, ranked The Bahamas at number one with a US$21,300 per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Oil-rich Trinidad and Tobago was ranked as the second richest with a GDP of US$19,700, a position which would usually have been held by Barbados, which ranks at number three with a GDP of US$18,200.

Aneki.com ranks Antigua and Barbuda is fourth, with a GDP of US$10,900. St. Kitts and Nevis, fifth with a GDP of US$8,200;  Dominican Republic, sixth with a GDP of US$8,000; St. Lucia,  seventh, with a GDP of US$4,800; Jamaica, eight, with  GDP of US$4,600; Cuba, ninth with  GDP of US$3,900  and Grenada, 10th with a GDP of US$3,900.

Nevisian Ms. Monique Liburd a student of the Charlestown Secondary School Sixth Form College came first in Nevis in the 2007 Caribbean Examinations Council’s Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) has also been named the Federation’s top scholar.
 
Premier of Nevis and Minister of Education Hon. Joseph Parry made the disclosure on Tuesday September 04, 2007 at his Bath Plain office and told Nevisians they should be proud of Ms Liburd’s performance.
 
“I must announce, very proudly of course, that Monique Liburd not only had the best results for the CAPE examinations on Nevis but she had the best results in the State. She obtained seven Grade 1s the only student to do so in St. Kitts and Nevis.
