Australia says the people-to-people ties with St. Kitts and Nevis were strengthened during the recent 2007 Cricket World Cup in Basseterre earlier this year.

Australian Prime Minister, the Hon. John Howard in wishing warmest wishes to St. Kitts and Nevis‘ Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Denzil L.Douglas on this nation’s 24th Anniversary of Independence said both countries enjoy warm and friendly relations that are underpinned by “our shared sporting endeavors, especially cricket, membership of the Commonwealth,international for a such as the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.”

“Our people-to-people ties were strengthened further during the 2007 Cricket World Cup when the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis hosted the first of Australia matches at the Warner Park Stadium. I appreciate greatly the warmth which the Australian Team was received,” said Prime Minister Howard.

The United States,the Republic of China on Taiwan,Guyana, India and Cuba were among several regional and international States sending messages of congratulations on St. Kitts and Nevis’ 24th Anniversary of Independence.

Drilling for water on Nevis will commence early next month, as scheduled, when the drill rig arrives on the island later this week.  That’s according to Junior Minister with responsibility for Public Utilities and the Environment, the Hon. Carlisle Powell. He made the disclosure recently while he gave the Department of Information a detailed update on the water exploration project which commenced in March.

Minister Powell said during a meeting with head of the advance team, Geologist Dr. Ronald Skiphoag of Bedrock Exploration And Development technologies (BEAD), he was informed that all the technical work had been completed and the project was now ready to move to the next phase.

“When they [the drill rigs] arrive in Nevis towards the end of September it is anticipated that they will start drilling in very early October. They have identified the sites and they will start drilling in the Hamilton area. It is proposed that they will move to a site in Cane Garden then the third proposal is a site in Beaumont.

Premier of Nevis and Minister of Tourism in the Nevis Island Administration Hon. Joseph Parry told Nevisians that they should prepare for a number of tourism related projects slated to commence in 2008 and beyond which would serve to enhance the economy of Nevis.
 
He said tourism was the premier industry on Nevis and therefore the island should be appealing to residents and visitors alike. The Premier’s comments came while he delivered his Independence Day address at Grove Park on September 19, 2007.
 
“The Lovers Beach Project is a Nevisian Project”¦on completion [it] will provide over 400 jobs. It will in no way affect the airport or the extension of the airport. It will in no way affect the ecology, we have checked these things out and it will enhance the development of the island of Nevis.
 
“The Herbert’s Beach Project [in St. James Parish] will be taking place next year. We have to ensure that Herbert’s Beach will remain open to the public and we have told the investors that they have to have public sessions around the island because we want to be transparent,” he said.

Junior Minister in the Ministry of Public Utilities and the Environment, Hon. Carlisle Powell recently disclosed that a team from West Indies Power Nevis Ltd, engaged in the investigation of an alternative energy source for Nevis formally advised the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) that it had completed the exploration phase of the Nevis development works and was now ready to progress to Phase II.
 
Mr. Powell told the Department of Information in a recent interview that Phase I of the programme entailed mapping and exploration work but Phase II would deal with drilling.
 
“The drilling part of it where they actually go down into the earth surface and try to find the geothermal energy…they are waiting on their drill rig as well so you [will] see two rigs operating at the same time in Nevis. 
 
“One searching for water and one searching for the energies that you would use for geothermal power; and so that’s where we are at right now with respect to geothermal power,” he said.
