St. Kitts – Nevis Sports Tourism Grows Economy

The growth of the sports tourism sub-sector in St. Kitts and Nevis means increased opportunities for locals in the sporting and tourism related fields.

During an appearance on SKNIS’ radio magazine programme Perspectives, Director of Sports Dave Connor said that the recent success of the sub-sector is due in large part to the close collaboration between his Department and the St. Kitts Tourism Authority and the benefits are being felt by the man on the street.

He referred to the improvements to the infrastructure which were generated by the hosting of first round matches of the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup to support his statement. Connor added that persons have benefited from employment opportunities created by the renovation of sporting facilities in St. Pauls, Conaree, St. Peters, Cayon, McKnight and other areas.

Consumer Affairs Brings Consumers & Businesses Together

Key among its many tasks, the Consumer Affairs Department serves as a link between consumers and businesses.

This was emphatically explained by Ambassador Rosalyn Hazelle Permanent Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs during an SKNIS interview.  She said Consumer Affairs should be seen as a vibrant department where there is interaction with the retailers and wholesalers as well as consumers.  Ambassador Hazelle said the department intends to establish credibility on all sides and intends to be fair.  She said that when they commence a programme they want it to be workable and evidence that a fair assessment was done.

Consumer Affairs Department Consultant Mr. Donald Cable elaborated on the fact that the department was instituted to work with all members of society and to promote national development.  He said they do not see the Ministry as being opposed in any way to the Chamber of Industry and Commerce or any particular business.  Mr. Cable said it is the Ministry’s decision to embrace all of society so that all members can rise to their responsibility to consumers and country.

Nevis Police Must Fight Crime For Tourism To Grow

President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CIC) Mr. Franklyn Brand underscored the importance of partnership to the police and crime fighting given the major investments made in the tourism industry and allied services in the Federation.
 
His comment came when he delivered the feature address at the fifth annual Police Appreciation Awards 2007 under the theme “Building on five years of success through Partnership” on February 16, 2008, at the Old Manor Hotel in Gingerland, Nevis.
 
“This mammoth undertaking of maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety, bringing criminals to justice and preventing and reducing crime can never reasonably be done by the police in isolation. Partnership with the police in crime fighting and prevention is imperative”¦partnership with the police, business community, religious organizations, community groups and government should be an accepted practice and not something to be lobbied for.
