A number of new public awareness campaigns will be initiated this year to encourage nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis to consume more local foods, which is usually fresher and healthier than imported food.

“Our aim is that by the end of the decade the vast majority of the food that we eat, and that our visitors eat, would be produced locally,” said Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas in his New Year’s message.

He said that over the next ten years, more must be done to feeed the residents of and visitors to St. Kitts and Nevis.

“It is already evident that as growth returns to the global economy, the increased demand for agricultural products from rapidly growing countries such as India and China, could send the price of food skyrocketing. We must act pre-emptively to grow more food locally and thereby protect our standard of living,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He said his Government has established a farm on 130 acres of land at Capisterre with the assistance of the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation.

“We will also provide enhanced technical, marketing and fiscal support to our farmers to boost food production,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
