A Cultural and Gala Evening, community flag raising ceremonies, the announcement of National Awards and the Prime Minister’s Lecture Series are among events to mark the 26th Anniversary of Independence.

Cabinet under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas reflected on the current challenges that face the twin-island Federation and the critical role that all segments of society should play in stemming violence among young people, in particular.

Cabinet approved the theme for this year’s Independence Celebrations, “Embracing Our Youth Today for a Brighter Tomorrow.”

Other events include the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving State Service, the Governor General’s Independence Reception, Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Robert L. Bradshaw Community Park, St. Paul’s, Schools’ Patriotic Programme and Treat, the traditional Ceremonial Parade, Mothers’ Union Breakfast, Governor General’s Reception and Community Block Parties.

Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty said the Official Programme will be released with more information on these and other events.

“The Cabinet of Ministers takes this opportunity to wish all citizens, home and abroad, and all residents of our federation a safe and fulfilling Independence season, and calls upon the entire nation to reflect upon and pursue this year’s theme for our National Independence,” said Minister Carty.

St. Kitts and Nevis became an Independent Nation on 19th September 1983 with Hon. Dr. Kennedy Simmonds as Prime Minister.
