Oualie Water Taxi Terminal on Nevis
Passengers traveling between St. Kitts and Nevis have shared positive feedback about the newly opened Oualie Water Taxi Terminal. The Nevis Island Administration officially commissioned the facility on March 27, offering a more comfortable and efficient experience for those using this major port of entry.
Since the opening, travelers have been able to take advantage of the improved waiting area and upgraded bathroom facilities, allowing for a smoother process before boarding water taxis.
A Significant Investment in Local Transportation
Deputy Premier of Nevis and Chairman of the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation, the Honourable Eric Evelyn, described the terminal as an important investment in both the Nevisian-owned water taxi industry and the wider community. He noted that the administration recognized the growing potential of inter-island travel and wanted to ensure that Nevisians benefited directly from this opportunity.
He highlighted that the large number of passengers crossing the short stretch of water between the two islands each day demonstrates the value of the project and the foresight of the administration that undertook it.
Opening Ceremony Highlights
During the opening ceremony, the Deputy Premier handed over the keys to Mr. Oral Brandy, General Manager of the Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority (NASPA). Deputy Governor General Her Honour Mrs. Hyleeta Liburd performed the ceremonial ribbon cutting to mark the official start of operations at the new terminal.
The Honourable Alexis Jeffers, who previously oversaw the project, announced future plans for the site. These include:
- Expanding parking areas
- Enhancing landscaping around the premises
- Building concession areas within the terminal
Growing Use of the Oualie Water Taxi Pier
The Oualie pier has long been a preferred gateway for travelers moving between St. Kitts and Nevis. In 2023 alone, more than 200,000 passengers used the facility. Recent data from NASPA shows continued growth:
- January 2024: 24,197 passengers, up from 19,767 in January 2023
- February 2024: 24,075 passengers, compared to 17,966 in February 2023
- March 2024: 26,019 passengers, up from 21,311 in March 2023
These increases reflect the terminal’s role as a central point of entry, especially as improvements to the Vance W. Amory International Airport are expected to continue redirecting large jets to St. Kitts, with passengers then traveling to Nevis by water taxi.
Supporting a Vital Local Industry
Premier of Nevis the Honourable Mark Brantley emphasized that the terminal is an essential part of a long-term plan to support the Nevisian-owned water taxi sector. He noted that the service has become a reliable option for both locals and visitors, and the new terminal enhances its convenience and accessibility.
The air-conditioned facility includes seating for more than 30 passengers, two boat fare windows, a Port Fee window, bathrooms, and administrative offices. Officials anticipate that the terminal will be fully open to the public soon, offering a modern and efficient space for travelers.
The continued investment in the Oualie Water Taxi Terminal demonstrates the island’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and supporting local businesses that contribute to the development and connectivity of Nevis.
