The Water Services Department is hosting a week of activities under the theme “Water Cooperation” to celebrate World Water Day (March 22), as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
This year’s theme highlights the importance of water to a society and life itself,” says Assistant Water Engineer Dr. Halla Sahely.
“Water cooperation is key to poverty eradication, social equity and gender equality,” she explained. “Water cooperation creates economic benefits since virtually all economic activities depend on water. Water cooperation is crucial to preserving water resources and protecting the environment. Sharing knowledge and best practices for Integrated Water Resources Management is one of the main goals of the Water Services Department. Water cooperation builds peace by creating and fostering trust between groups and communities. Finally, there is no doubt that water unites rather than divides people and societies and that it is truly the foundation for sustainable development.”
The week of activities will commence on March 17 with a service at the Antioch Baptist Church. The staff of the department will interact with the community by visiting schools, both primary and secondary, appearing on radio and television, hosting a meet and greet event at the Circus on Friday, March 22 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as well as facilitating a guided hike to the Wingfield water source on Saturday, March 23 from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
The Water Services Department will also launch its website on March 22. The website address will be www.water.gov.kn. Dr. Sahely explained that “it will be the one-stop shop for all things related to water in our Federation.”
“Consumers will be able to access a wide array of information ranging from various services offered by the department, notices, FAQs to conservation tips and educational materials for children of all ages,” she said. “Up to date information related to your water supply will be posted often. The website will be an important platform for the public to play a positive role in protecting the water resources of St. Kitts.”
The Assistant Water Engineer added that “this is a call for action; for all of us to work together to manage and utilize our water resources in a sustainable manner.”
