The Labour Department in St. Kitts – Nevis is currently being updated with new computer software that will allow persons to access information within the department more efficiently.
Renald Simons, Senior Specialist in Employment and Labour Market Policies in Surinam, who is assisting with the instillation of the software and the training component, shared the benefits of the programme.
“The department of labour will be able to produce statistical and non-statistical information more efficiently,” Mr. Simons noted. “We are pulling together all the information in the labour market, such as employment; in one place in order to design policies, to monitor how different policies are implemented and to evaluate them. This not only targets policy people but the average employer or “˜the man on the street’ so that they can also know what is going on in the labour market as it relates to them.”
Over the past years the government of St. Kitts and Nevis in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), in which the Federation is a member state, have been assessing a number of labour administration issues. The concept of a Decent Work Country Programme was thus designed to solve these issues.
The four priority areas of the programme include the revision of all the labour laws and the subsequent development of a labour code, the strengthening the labour market information system, the development of national workplace policies and the strengthening of the tripartite relationship between government, employer and worker representatives.
The department will now become a producer of statistics and other relevant information which they will put on their upcoming website.
