The Government’s efforts at promoting renewable energy in the Federation today received a boost in a brief handing over ceremony held at the Embassy of the Republic of China.

Minister of Public Utilities Hon. Earl Asim Martin was on hand to receive a cheque to fund a pilot project that would see the installation of 100 LED Smart Lights along the Kim Collins Highway and a portion of the Frigate Bay Road.

In giving brief remarks, Head of Taiwanese Mission in St. Kitts and Nevis His Excellency Ambassador Miguel Tsao said as no country can stay away from the tide of the world’s development, Taiwan is happy to share the competitive edge in the development of renewable energy.

“According to preliminary studies from specialists in renewable energy” said Ambassador Tsao, “this kind of light can produce 70% savings of energy and last quite a long time. All the street lights are computerized and each light can be intensified according to the need of the respective area and time.”

The Ambassador also added that although relatively small, there is great benefit to be derived from this pilot project as it is a stepping stone to protecting the environment and leaving a better Federation for our children. The move supports Government’s energy policy of achieving 60% energy generation from green energy sources.

Minister Asim Martin, in accepting the cheque, expressed his thanks to the Ambassador and people of the Republic of China for their understanding in working with the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to implement the Government’s overall policy on renewable energy.

“We expect that this project will start very shortly, the completion date we expect to be some time in maybe mid to the end of August” said Minister Martin, “so we are looking at between May and August having the Kim Collins highway right up to the Sugars building being lit with LED street lights.”

Minister Martin also said that he has been assured that once this pilot project is successful, similar projects will be implemented in other areas around the country.

A key piece of machinery has been commissioned to beautify St. Kitts with the handing over of a Motorized Mower to the Parks and Beaches Unit in Ministry of Health.

The machine was handed over by representatives of the Republic of China (Taiwan) this morning in a brief ceremony chaired by Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Andrew Skerritt. The Acting P.S. said the Republic of China (ROC) has been long serving in their assistance to, and development of our people here in St. Kitts and Nevis

Resident Ambassador of the ROC to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis Mr. Miguel Tsao, thanked the Minister of Health Hon. Marcella Liburd and her team for their hard work and direction of the Ministry and said the ROC is always happy to assist in helping to keep St. Kitts and Nevis one of the top 10 most beautiful destinations in the world.

“St. Kitts and Nevis indeed is a paradise” said Ambassador Tsao. “The scenery here is captivating and breathtaking. That is one of the many many reasons the twin island country is considered one of the top ten touristic destinations in the world.”

“This is not only a Government achievement, but also happiness, a tangible result shared by all in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis” he also said. “Your country is blessed with such beautiful mountain, pristine beaches and awesome landscapes – that is a gift from God.”

In giving brief remarks, Minister of Health Hon. Marcella Liburd described the ceremony as small, but having a huge impact on the appearance of this country.

“We are always delighted to be partnering with the republic of China on Taiwan” said Minister Liburd. “Over the last 28 years when you look around this country, you could see the impact of that partnership on all of us here in St. Kitts and Nevis. We are very grateful and thankful for the support of the Taiwanese Government and people.”

The Minister also took the opportunity to commend and congratulate the Parks and Beaches Unit, who in 2011 were recognized at the St. Kitts Tourism Authority Awards for their efforts to beautify St. Kitts for residents and visitors alike.

“We in the Department of Health and indeed the Parks and Beaches Unit take much pride in the beautification of our country and the country recognizes that” said the Health Minister. “Only very recently in the last Tourism Banquet, this unit got the award for the impact on the environment. And so, we would want to work with them and try to see how we could make it easier for them to work to beautify the country, and this is just one step in that direction” she also said.

The Minister added that the donation of this piece of landscaping equipment will further demonstrate the Ministry of Health and the ROC’s commitment to partnership for a more beautiful St. Kitts and Nevis.

Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Miguel Tsao said the electrification of Government Headquarters by solar energy signifies the commitment his Asian nation places on the everlasting friendship with the twin-island Federation and as a partner and ally – to provide new technology where possible.

Delivering remarks at a ceremony to activate the solar panels mounted on the roof of Government Headquarters to the national grid, Ambassador Tsao noted that the project comes following a visit to Taiwan in march by Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and Minister of Energy, the Hon. Dr. Asim Martin, when they visited a solar power plant and renewable energy factory.

“It reflects and demonstrates the emphasis and importance of their visit today during this ceremony. Certainly fruit has been borne of their tangible visit to my country,” said the top Taiwan diplomat, who noted the Right Honourable Prime Minister’s energy policy which is to achieve 60% energy generation from green energy sources by 2015.

“This project is consistent with that objective, and we hope what we do today can redound to benefit all for tomorrow. A popular Taiwanese saying is: “If we don’t do today, we will regret tomorrow” and also as the saying goes we will “throw out a sprat to catch a whale.”

Ambassador Tsao noted that due to limited roof space for solar panels, the project is meant to be a demonstration project and is also a stepping stone.

“My knowledge of solar panels is not vast but I was reliable informed that electricity from the solar panels are enough to power all lighting and most office machines with the solar panels lasting for total of 25 years,” he said.

The Taiwanese Ambassador also informed the fathering that solar power will also be incorporated into the Newton Ground Demonstration Farm project – whose design Prime Minister Dr. Douglas have had a hand in shaping.

“Again, I applaud your vision and passion in always putting your people’s interest first,” said Ambassador Tsao and used the opportunity to express thanks to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Lenrick Lake for the support given to the bilateral cooperation projects.

He also thanked Madam Tai-Hui Wu, Commissioner of Taiwanese Overseas Compatriot Affairs and owner of Solar Power Industries Inc. – one of the most thriving growing company in the USA – ceiling fan market.
